backyard chicken coops

Wife wants to get a few hens to raise for eggs. With work right now I have no time to spend building a coop. Before I go buy one of the pre-fab ones at tractor supply(knowing I will have to replace it in a couple years), does anyone know a local person who builds and sells them?

Probably help to define local.

Prepare your anus because they want a ton of money for them. We have a about 6 hens left and it’s cheaper to buy eggs unless you can free range them for most of their food

Bought one from tractor supply, actually impressed with it, well designed, not the most sturdy but I figure in a few years the wife will have lost interest or be ready for a bigger one
Got it on clearance for 350 [/img]

Check the feed store in town, they might have one.

I saw the few on craigslist, but they were pretty expensive. Was hoping to find someone that did some more basic stuff.

What's with the pine straw ring around the coop? Any purpose or just for looks?

chickens are some nasty frickers....there was probably a matt of fricked up grass and chicken shite around the thing that they needed to cover up for the picture.

That's the same one I bought on clearance.
I set it on 2x6s and have stiffened it up a bit.
First Sat of the month there's a chicken swap at the TS store in Denham.

Put some wheels on the coop and move it once a week. They won’t be standing in their shite and keeps you from having to shovel hay or pine chips.

I wanted to do that, but the squirrels and mice started digging under the wall so I've got a concrete footer damn near around the entire perimeter.

wont last. Build one with treated lumber, check craigslist, expect to pay 4-700 for a good one. But dont put many birds in those things, they will gey bored quick in such a small area and peck each other bald. I started off with a nice chicken tractor last year someone made on craigslist. Moved it around the yd daily. Realized quick my birds was miserable confined in there, they were pecking each other. Even moving it to new grass daily. So i got the lumber and built a coop, and then bought one of those dog kennels from tractor supply. That was easiest route. Threw up the dog kennel in a few mins, then built the coop on the side and cut a hole in kennel and attached it. Boom easy, chicken coop and run.. not sure where you live but after about a week i started opening the gate every morn and let the. free range, they stay right by the house and go back to the coop at night, when i go shut the gate. Much happier chickens = more eggs

TS has one on sale for 199 right now. Thinking of getting it, spraying it with water seal and letting it roll for a year. If she likes having hens it will last long enough for work to slow down and build something more permanent.

I am having a problem keeping their water clean. Any ideas on a way to keep them from shitting in their water? I have one of those gravity water troughs elevated and also a big pot I have to dump and refill everyday. Looking for good ideas.

Get a 5 gallon bucket with a lid. drill holes in the bottom and add those little rabbit bottle drippers into the bottom. I bought the drippers from amazon for cheap. Of course you have to hang the bucket but it works for about $5. I've been using this set up for 2 years no chicken shite in the water.
