Anyone own a woodworking side business?

I love working with wood and building things and although I would need to purchase a few more tools, I want to start selling woodworking items on the side on Etsy. What types of woodworking sells the best? I see that birdhouses sell quite a bit but I don't think I would enjoy building birdhouses since birds aren't my thing. I guess I could get into it if they sell well enough but I just don't see myself focusing on that.
Anyone here have any tips?

I know some guys that do this building custom furniture. Mostly people bring them Pottery Barn catalogues and ask them to recreate with changes. They are good at their craft and usually are booked for months out. A big source of their work is from local designers who are making orders for their clients. A family member of mine built custom fireplace mantles on the side - he lined up with a contractor and he would build out all the mantles.
Also, if you can frame posters/art/photographs, you can make some good money in custom framing. A friend does this with cypress framing and does a lot of music festival posters for clients.

Simple custom furniture always finds a market. Coffee tables, side tables, sofa tables, nightstands: the lower priced stuff on the market is complete trash, and it can be hard to find solid wood finished on all sides. These items aren't easy to ship, so you'll need to cultivate a local market.

Yea, I would preferably do the exact things you said but for this reason, I'm leaning away from that. If I sell to anyone in Louisiana I'm going to need to charge state sales tax, which means I'm going to have to apply for that license with the state (forget what it's called but to charge state sales tax you need to have some type of account or license with the state). I'd rather sell online and ship things out of state so I don't have to charge sales tax.
If that's incorrect, please let me know. But that's how I understand it to be.

Farmhouse tables are big now. Probably $50-100 total in lumber and sell for $100 linear foot. $150-200 for a bench.
To actually make it a side gig it's gonna have to be something you can either knock out fast and in bulk. Build 5-10 at a time and custom finish when ordered.

Hell, I may make one of these for my own bathroom and use it for towels. I don't have room for a long towel rack so I instead am forced to use tiny singular towel hooks instead. The towel just sits there without enough airflow to dry and it stays wet for too long. I could use a "blanket ladder" myself.

You need to look into the tax issue thing. States have found ways to make you tax liable regardless of where you live and sell your stuff

I'm pretty sure if you sell something you make in Louisiana to someone who lives in Louisiana, you must charge sales tax. If you make something in Louisiana but sell to someone in another state and ship it there, no sales tax is required. I've done some reading on the subject and that's how I understood it. I could be wrong though, I don't claim to be any type of expert. Maybe someone else on here knows?

That is at best incomplete. It depends on the state. If anything selling only in Louisiana probably makes your life easier because you only have to comply with one set of rules.

State sales tax really isn't a big deal for someone selling like $5-10k a year. For something like that just price it in. Then just pay it 2-3 times a year and file $0 the other months.
