Yep. Any list without Merle is a bad list.

Anyone who says no, needs to read his book. Broke the arm of Buck Owens and got into the a fight with the Rolling Stones in Austin. Drank more whiskey and snorted more coke than any one in music and lived to tell about it.

Not to mention he did things vocally that no other country singer could do. The man launched thousands upon thousands of imitators.

My Dad played drums for Loretta Lynn for 16 years. One night in Nashville Loretta worked a date with Jones and TG Shepard. For some reason, Shepard had Jones open the show. Jones was furious at having to do so and went out and killed it. I was sitting in the dressing room when the final notes of "He Stopped Loving Her Today" rang out. The crowd was cheering so loudly that the walls in that old dressing room were literally vibrating. Never heard anything like it.

Where did you hear this from? The Stones played a headliner with Jones and Bobby Vee in 1965 in San Antonio, but they liked him and the feeling was mutual. This is where Keith and Bobby Keys hooked up for the first time.

Btw, The Stones were nearly booed off the stage by the cowboys that came to see George.

Maybe not GOAT but easily Top 5 and the one I would want to hang out with in his heyday.

Hard to argue, he and Merle would have to right up there. George though had a great voice.

Dwight Yoakum,

Does not get the recognition he deserves. He was certainly one of the more original country guys of the late 80's and early 90's.

I also think Alan Jackson maybe had/has the perfect country music voice.

I believe it was from The Life and Times of A Honky Tonk Legend. I could be mistaken about the title of the book and I have to admit I read it 20 years ago.

I've always like TG Shepard, but he definitely seems to have an ego greater than his stature.

I don't think you can say who is the best. But in addition to the names listed already I think you have to also consider Jimmy Rodgers and Lefty Frizzell,
