my mother still lives off Barriere Road in the house my father built for us...
have several family members living there in places from the Intracoastal Canal to Lake Hermitage
it's a different place (for the better) then when I was growing up:
better connections out (the drawbridge is a PAIN in the arse though)
schools are FAR better
and there are a few things to do (rather than not a damned thing)
I personally wouldn't live there due to personal feelings...(having lived through school integration as one of the white kids who stayed)

Salvos I find over cooks their fried seafood and can't boil shrimp for shite.
That may be because a lot of places can't seem to get boiled shrimp right making them hard to peel. But the boiled crawfish, etc. is the main attraction and they do that very well. Plus it's not in BFE like the other places.

The other places are gone.

My dad coached under Amos for about 10 years, around 77/78-89 when we left. Initials are AK.. We lived in the old teachers apartments, that are actuarial standing.. My “big brother” died in a crash in the late 90’s, he actually went to Stanislaus.. Initials are JC, his sister is MC.. My mom graduated from DHA, grew up down Milan Drive in PS, and was married to G. O’Brien before my dad.. She had my two sisters, who are your age, with him..

I know exactly who you are. I miss Jason. He was a good friend.

Think about him all the time.. I still talk to and see Missy often.. She’s been through way too much..

What happened to them? I never went to either one, but I've been in those areas.

Katrina I’d imagine.. There are only a few restaurants below Jesuit Bend now.. There’s just not much of a customer base south of JB anymore..

Greatly appreciate all the info gents. I was nervous coming back to Louisiana, but it seems like I'll be fine. Lakeview, I might take you up on that offer.

Missy was a year younger than me. I have a older brother that graduated from Buras in 89 CR. He is a deputy in Belle Chasse now.
My wife was a Buras and her brother CB was a real good pitcher for Buras in 98.

Just across the river is a great place called St Bernard Parish. You should check it out.

It goes back a lot further than Katrina...Betsy wiped pretty much everything south of the Empire Canal...4 years later Camille did it again...
Freeport Sulphur shutting down killed Port Sulphur...the dock on the river where my dad used to tie up with the liquid sulphur barges are long gone

Anyone remember Sig’s in Port Sulphur? Nice restaurant with great bread pudding.

Betsy was in 2001? If you mean 40, ok. But while Betsy may have wiped out a lot, wat more of a comeback was made compared to post-Katrina.

It definitely put a hurt on the town. My uncle, and a few guys I work with worked there until the end.

I’m just guessing, but I bet that was a typo and he meant 40 years.
