Race is the original sin of American democracy. Our politics are roiled by being a generation away from becoming a majority minority country. Of course race is a major political issue.

Disagree. Trump's the only President to have never served in elected office or the military. Obama is utterly conventional in almost every since besides his race - two Ivy League degrees. State House and Congressional service.
