I've got four batteries. Two are probably 10 or 12 years old. The other two are maybe 8 or 9 years old. I'm trying to charge them this morning and getting the "fast flash" (replace battery) signal on all of them. I've tried a second charger in case the first was screwed up somehow. Same deal.

What is typical battery life? These get used, but not heavily. It's not like they spend six days a week on job sites.
If the batteries are all bad and I don't want to shell out $80 or $100 for each new battery, are the tools now all paper weights?

Dude. You got a decade out of them. You got your moneys worth.

Now is actually not a terrible time to shop for new tools. Deals to be had the closer you get to Father’s Day.

ETA: if you want to upgrade to 20v tools, Dewalt makes an adapter to allow the 20v batteries to work on your 18v tools. Post Christmas you can find stuff on clearance all over.

Also, search dewalt 18v on amazon and you can find knock off batteries. I have no idea how well they work or how long they last, but it’s an inexpensive solution to hold you over until you can invest in new tools.

You got lucky. They usually don't have that long of life. 5 years is good. 8 years is great.

Beware from what I've heard is that the new lithium batts don't have near the life as a NiCad.

eta: They make an adapter to run your old 18v on the new 20v dewalts so you don't necessarily need to throw out your old stuff. Or you could just buy new 18v batteries. New Dewalts cost about $50/pop and aftermarket cheapos about $20. I've had decent luck with the cheapos.

Nope, but don't buy any 18volt batteries. Dewalt makes a converter for 18volt tools that allows you to use the 20volt batteries. Buy the kit with the converter, 2-20volt batteries and the charger. This way you can upgrade your tools without having to get all new batteries.

The Batteries Plus Bulbs store puts new batteries in them. Cheaper than buying new ones.

Interstate Batteries can rebuild the ones you have for pretty cheap. But do yourself a favor and just get new Makita stuff

i had this same problem. had 4 batteries, all died around the same time after about a decade. just bit the bullet and bought some 20v li. went with porter cable. seemed to be the best deal. very happy so far.

also, battery life much better than the old 18v nicad's.

I didn't realize the price had dropped that much. They were $99 for years. I remember getting excited when I saw a replacement battery for $79 once.

More than his moneys worth. I'm just happy if I can get a battery to last more than a couple of years.

Also, Makita Lithium Ion batteries have 2-3 times the life of NiCad. Plus, Makita charges in half the time as dewalt or Milwaukee.

FYI, the parent company that owns Black and Decker now owns Dewalt. Or vice versa. The new Black and Decker tools are no longer the Walmart special.

I’ve had poor luck with Rigid cordless tools, had two superintendents send in multiple tools within the first 6 month or purchase. The Porter Cable stuff breaks easily. I personally have never been a fan of Makita. Ryobi is junk.

I’m a huge fan of dewalt because I’ve used them professionally and have seen what you can put those tools thru and still have them perform. I purchased a set at the beginning of a three year project and they were used daily without having a single one fail. I’ve converted most of my personal tools over to dewalt 20v from the craftsman set I had since high school.

But if you’re on a budget, there are other quality options.

Dewalt or Milwaukee are my go-to's.

I will say, though, I have a Makita miter saw that is damn near as old as I am and it still works like a charm. On the flip side, I bought a Makita grinder that was way on sale at Home Depot and the first time I went to use it the power switch popped off. Maybe that's why it was on sale...

You might be able to find a 2 pack at Lowe's or HD. Amazon has the 2 pack for 109.99

I can remember my grandfather waxing poetically about how much he hated Makita tools. It might be completely unfounded now, but I feel like he would haunt me if I ever bought one.
