Its gameday, baws! Lets see those score/stat predictions.
First Pitch @ 7:00pm
SECN+ / WatchESPN
98.1 FM
Starting Pitchers:
LSU – Jr. RHP Caleb Gilbert (7-1, 2.16 ERA, 58.1 IP, 12 BB, 67 SO in 2017)
Notre Dame – Gr. LHP Scott Tully (2-0, 3.71 ERA, 17.0 IP, 10 BB, 12 SO in 2017)
CPM on Opening Day:
"There is nothing quite like the feeling of Opening Day in our stadium in front of our passionate fans. Every year, the anxiety of not knowing what the new season holds keeps me young. In the preseason polls we are rated anywhere between No. 9 and No. 17, but we realize you earn what you get on the field, not on paper. I think there’s a wide range of what people might think about our team this year because of the newness of our team, but our expectation will be, as it always is at LSU, to have our team in position to play for championships at the end of the year."

Notre Dame OF Matt Vierling and 2B Nick Podkul are both ranked in the top 30 at their position according to D1 Baseball. Vierling also pitches from time to time.
Coincidentally, this is the first of two Vierling siblings LSU will face this season. Matt's younger brother Mark is a freshman INF for Mizzou, who LSU plays in March.

Does anyone know who our closer & setup man are supposed to be?

Devin Fontenot picked Hells Bells as his walk out song. Based on that, I'm going to bet he takes over as closer at some point.

Ah. I haven't really been keeping up with the baseball news as of late.
I just saw that Nick Storz is going to be out for the start of the season. That's unfortunate. I know his name was being thrown around as a possible candidate for closer.
After Gilbert, Hess, & Peterson got named as the weekend starters...we really don't have any proven arms coming out of the bullpen. I guess we'll just have to wait & see what guys step up. At least we have plenty of options to choose from.

Bullpen Roles Remain Up in the Air as LSU Set to Open the Season Against Notre Dame
quote:
“If you asked me who our closer is going to be, I can’t tell you the answer to that question,” Mainieri said. “How are we going to find out which guys we can count on unless we run them out there?”
quote:
Freshmen Ma’Khail Hilliard and Devin Fontenot remain the odds-on favorites to be LSU’s go-to relievers at some point, but Mainieri hinted that he’d prefer to give first dibs to more veteran options, at least on Opening Night. The reason is simple: it’s hard to simulate the adrenaline of 12,000 people screaming in the ninth inning of a 3-2 ballgame.
quote:
“Opening day is different than every other day, so typically I like to go with the veterans,” Mainieri said. “They’ve been around here. They know what the environment is like. They’ve pitched in Omaha. They’ve pitched in front of big crowds and so forth.”
quote:
That essentially leaves three options out of a bullpen that’s awfully short of collegiate experience: Matt Beck, Austin Bain and lefty Nick Bush. What order they’re used could depend simply on how Notre Dame’s batting order lines up and game situations.
As Ell said, "It's rarely ever one guy in college."

Couldn't agree more. Finally got some juice running through my veins about LSU athletics.

We probably don't have the pitching depth this year. Last year was our legit chance at #7. We'll probably take a step back this year. We'll probably get a regional host but a Super Regional host would be a surprise.

Looking forward to this weekend series. Hopefully, the weather cooperates.
