I pay around $30/year to insure my photography equipment with $3,000 in coverage. If my apartment were to go up in flames, could I replace the equipment without insurance?

Do you not have renters or homeowners insurance? That would be covered if so.

The issue is you are nit picking what you have covered. You simply can't have insurance for absolutely everything, or if you do the cost is outrageous.

I paid $180 for the gap insurance. It's peace of mind because the chances of my wife totaling this thing out for being absent minded while driving is higher than the mean.

If the gap in the first year floats between $5,000-$7,500, I think regardless if I have the ability to cover the difference, it's advantageous to guard against that for $180. It's a strict risk assessment and one that is not very costly.

Just understand that you will really be paying the $180 plus the $1000 deductible if you need to use it, so really $1180 for 1 year of insurance to cover a $5000 possibility. Not saying that makes it a bad idea.

Still a +3820 cost avoidance.

It's the price I pay to keep $7,500 theoretically at work, guard against risk of wife totaling it out and facing a loss, and a savings. I'm okay with it.

tell them you are paying cash for the vehicle. then when they get to a price, see if they keep that same price for 0% down 0% interest

Negotiate the price after telling them you're putting 20% down and you'll finance it with them and then after arriving at their best price tell them you want that price with 0% down.
