Dallas Goedert Would Be Lethal In Our Offense!

I've been seeing more and more mocks that have us drafting this kid so I went and started researching him. This kid seems to be the real deal!
Dallas Goedert/TE/South Dakota State
Overview
This South Dakota native has blossomed into a NFL-caliber receiving tight end during his time with the home-state Jackrabbits. Goedert (pronounced GOD-ert) was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award as the top player in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2016, also grabbing several All-American awards and a first-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference nod. His combination of size, speed, agility, and reliable hands allowed him to rank him in the top 15 in the FCS with 92 receptions for 1,293 yards and 11 touchdowns -- and made scouts stand up and notice. Goedert started 10 of 12 games played as a sophomore, catching 26 passes for 484 yards and three scores; he had a part in the team's win over Kansas early on, catching two passes for 49 yards. He played in 14 games as a redshirt freshman in 2014, and lead the team's tight ends with eight receptions for 100 yards.
Analysis
Strengths Runs with good bend up the field and into routes. Moveable chess piece. Capable three-level worker as pass catcher. Team looked to find creative ways to get football in his hands. Carries good strength in frame and plays through physical challenges in his routes. Gains adequate separation with short and intermediate routes. Maintains top play speed when working vertically. Able to work over top of linebackers. Former high school hooper with advanced ball skills and body control. Pass snatcher with huge paws and strong hands. His highlight reels are filled with acrobatic, one-hand catches. Uses frame to gain advantageous positioning and can make in-air adjustments. Has size and technique to work with as in-line blocker. Strikes with good pad level, knee bend and hand placement. Looked stronger at point of attack this season. Possesses balance to hang in against rugged ends if he plays tough.
Weaknesses Moves with somewhat restricted stride length. Is not a route salesman. Gives route intention away with early directional leans into breaks. Rarely relies on leverage and head fakes to create his separation. Looked bigger on tape in 2017 and quickness appeared to suffer somewhat. Would benefit from varying route speeds. Too eager to try for one-handed spear attempts rather than two handed snares at times. Agility with ball in his hands is average by NFL standards. Effort level as blocker can be inconsistent. Needs to get better hip roll into initial contact. May need a fire lit under him in order to handle in-line blocking duties as a pro.
NFL Comparison Zach Ertz
Bottom Line Goedert is a very talented pass catching tight end with the ability to work all three levels of the field. His ball focus and ability to make the spectacular catch will make him the darling of fans and media throughout the draft process, but, he still has work to do. Goedert dominated a lower level of competition and will have to prove he can uncover and block against bigger, more explosive athletes as a pro. The size, speed and talent is there for him to succeed as a very good combo tight end if he works and plays with a little more urgency.

This is the hardest dude for me to figure out.
He looks like Gronk @ FCS
He got hurt at the Senior Bowl, so I have no clue how this guy would look against talent as good as him.

This very well could be our first round pick

Some really good TE's in this class. If we have to draft this kid at 27 to get him, I would pass. We need a day 1 impact player with that pick. TE's usually aren't day 1 impact guys. Takes at least 2-3 years for them to fully develop. Throw in the FCS tidbit in there, too risky for 27 and where we're at as a franchise currently. IMO.

I'm curious if we trade back to get another pick, like two second rounders if we don't have the guys we want at that position. I know this isn't our MO, but Ireland may be the wrinkle to throw this idea out there for once. With no second round pick currently, it wouldn't be the worst idea if there's no sure fire guy on the board.

I'd take him at 27 if it were guaranteed that he would be developed by his 2nd year. We should have Fleener & Hill to bridge the gap until 2019. I can definitely see your point though, b/c if he isn't ready by his 2nd year...we're going to be in a bad situation (in 2019) at the TE position. Fleener is almost certainly getting cut in 2019. Hill & Hooman (I think he's gone this year) aren't under contract for 2019 either.
The 1 thing that could save us is the fact that cutting Fleener in 2019 will save us 7.4 mil against the cap. We should be able to get a legit TE in F.A. after Fleener is let go.

That's why I don't understand the guys that want to pay for a FA TE this year. The draft is deep with potential impact TEs

I think the coaches basically told us their plan after they didn't cut Fleener a few days ago. It really doesn't make any sense at all to cut him anymore, so one would have to assume that TE is one of the main targets in the draft.

I'm starting to lean this way as well. Draft a TE this year (top 3 rounds), then sign a free agent TE next year.

Would rather just get Trey Burton
Posted on 2/12/18 at 12:57 pm to WicKed WayZ
I think he'd be a great addition, but I think we might have already committed.
Fleener - 8 mil cap hit
Hill - 2.83 mil cap hit
Burton has a market value of 7.0 mil per season.
Technically, we could make it work if we cut both Hill & Hooman...then just back-load the shite out of Burton's contract like Loomis always does. I guess it comes down to whether or not they think Burton will be better than anything that's available in 2019. We should be able to sign any UFA TE that we want in 2019 after we rid ourselves of all our current TE contracts.

No

He looks like he can be really good but I'd take Mike Gesicki from penn state. Hopefully we can get him in the second or later. He's 6'6", has hops, and looks nearly unguardable 1v1.

Checks out.
I hope he’s still around in 3rd. I’d love him with that pick. Obviously wouldn’t be thrilled using a 1st rounder on a FCS TE. In Ireland I trust.

I like the penn state guy a bit more.

He is a former basketball recruit and his last name starts with a G.
Gates, Graham, Goedert.
Sign him up.

Neither can block that well and probably wouldn’t see the field until third down because of that.

I don't think you can burn a 1st rounder on someone who starred at South Dakota State. I think its too much of a risk picking someone that early who isn't proven against elite NFL caliber players from a major conference.
