So is Fleener now a no go for a cut?

Since $3.4 million of his salary got guaranteed on Wednesday his dead money is now more than his cap hit.
Does that pretty much mean the Saints are stuck with him for at least another year with no realistic options to cut him?

I am ok with keeping him. Our cap is in an ok spot and by keeping him we arent putting ourselves in a must address situation.
We can still test the market and gauge what prices people are going for without the market dictating us having to sign someone or utilize either a 1st or 3rd on a TE who may not even be day 1 ready.
The smart play was to keep him. Worst case scenario we still bring someone in and have a quality backup right behind him.

We can still cut him June 1st and save money, but makes it less likely.
It'll really depend on the draft and FA too, but given our lack of receiving threats at the position we still may need him this year even if we do get someone else.

and they likely have no leverage to get him to take a pay cut is my guess at this point. So his $8 million cap hit is pretty much what it is.

He's underwhelmed, but going into 2018 with Josh Hill as the most experienced TE in your system seems like a really bad idea.
One more year of Fleener makes the most sense. This allows you to sign or draft another guy to bring up in the system assuming Fleener is who he is.

I was hopeful that they would go after Trey Burton

Yeah pretty much no leverage. We can save $3 mil cutting him June 1st so we could try to leverage that, but it's really false leverage because cutting him June 1st puts dead money on next year's cap.
Honestly since we didn't cut him before Wednesday it seemed a pretty clear message we were keeping him.
I think you look at upgrading over the other two guys this year, and look to a true replacement for Fleener next year.

We still could. We have enough cap to sign at least 3-5 pretty good-great FAs even after resigning Brees.
And having two TE sets with two legit receiving threats would be a good thing.

Would Jimmy be a realistic option as that FA tight end? He won’t command as much as his previous contract and you know his value in this system.

I thought Fleener played much better this season. Keeping him another year wouldn't be the worst thing. As much as I want to see them upgrade at TE it might be best to wait for the draft and use free agency to address other areas of need.

Depends on how the relationship is. Is the bridge burned or would he want to come back and try for a ring with Brees?

I think his injury had something to do with not getting cut? Not a fan.

Sadly he’s the best tight end on the roster and is insurance in case we can’t land a FA or draft a rookie.

He can add value more as a possesion WR from the slot but dammit I want a do-it all TE.
If we keep Fleener I hope we draft a TE early-ish.

I’d rather Burton. Jimmy would be still expensive for. TE. Burton coming off as a back up would be cheaper

I like your take on this.

Looking at post-June 1st cuts...cutting Fleener would save 3 mil & cutting Hooman would save 1.6 mil. Just looking at those numbers...I think it's very likely that Hooman gets cut as long as we add a TE in the off-season. People might want to start accepting the fact that Fleener will be playing here in 2018. As some people have stated already, we don't really have any leverage to force him into take a paycut anymore.
I'd be very surprised if our TE's next year weren't Fleener, Hill, & a new TE (either F.A. or the draft). Only way we keep Hooman is if we strike out on all our targets in F.A. & the draft imo.
Fleener is probably gone in 2019 though. He has a cap # of 9 mil. We save 7.4 mil by cutting him, & only take a dead money hit of 1.6 mil (this is also pre-June 1st). Fleener would have to have a really big year in 2018 to not get cut in 2019.
