Remember Janzen Jackson

He attended Carenco and Barbe high schools and was rated as a 5 star DB (No 2. Cornerback in the country). He was considered a dead lock to sign with LSU.
If I remember correctly, Jackson announced on signing day that he was delaying his signing until the next day so his mother in California could attend the signing ceremony. This excuse has always smelled to me. Anyway, he signed the next day with Tennessee much to everyone's surprise. His father said that he wanted his son out of Louisiana's cesspool of crime.
Lo and behold, Janzen could not stay out of trouble at Tennessee where he was charged as an accomplice to an armed robbery, was later re-instated to the team, and then later kicked off the team for unspecified reasons. He then enrolled at McNeese where again (if 8 remember correctly) he got into trouble again and was kicked off the team.
We as fans were outraged at the time of Jackson's dick move to spurn LSU while he told the coaches all along he was signing with LSU. Some say Lane Kiffen told him to continue to lie to LSU. So you just never know how things turn out with losing high profile players.

I mean, I guess. But statistics show highly rated players end up turning into good college players on a consistent basis.

Yes. Let's keep losing them to the Gumps et al...

Wasn't Orgeron recruiting him back then?

Yes. O and Lane had Janzen hold off committing to UT so LSU couldn't fill the spot.

Janzen Jackson was rated by numerous recruiting sites as a top ten player. Some of them have gone back and low-key edited their old rankings (iirc ESPN and Rivals do this and post an article about it sometimes), but his rivals profile still shows him as a five-star player in that class.
There's not much reason to think Surtain is SO frickING MUCH better than Jackson as you're suggesting.
Jackson would still be on my short list for guys I'm most pissed we missed in the last ten years.

lets revisit this in 3 years.

Its always interesting to see how it all turns out. Remember the meltdown in 2014 when LSU "only " got Leonard Fournette & Malachi Dupree out of the 5 for 5 group losing Hootie Jones, Tony Brown, and Landon Collins brother ( can't even remember his name).
They ended up settling for Jamal Adams when they lost Hootie.
So you never know.

You know your boy O had his fingerprints all over that situation, right? He knew Lance since HE was a kid and Janzen since he was a baby - just to be absolutely honest about that situation.

Well, yea but this time we didn’t even settle. We got nothing. Poor recruiting by O. Jobs too big

Orgeron was the lead recruiter. I worked in the restaurant where they had dinner. Meet O and JJ. Awesome meeting O. He was a pretty cool dude. Got tigerbaited big time!

Surtain and Tony Brown were rated basically the same coming out of high school. This board went ape shite when Brown signed last minute with Bama. Brown was a very average college player who probably wouldn't have started at LSU. I believe it is best to have a "Too soon to tell" mindset with recruiting.

Do you remember Landon Collins? 5 Star DB from Louisiana. He was considered a dead lock to sign with LSU.
Anyway, he signed with Alabama much to everyone's surpsise
Low and behold, he was a top tier safety in the SEC for 3 years, drafted in the 1st round of the NFL Draft, and is a starter for the NY Giants.
So you just never know how things turn out with losing high profile players.

So I guess Ed O calling us our "dream school" was just lie #2,000,000 for ole Ed O, right?

maybe, but you have to wait and see how it all unfolds. What if Surtain flames out, never really develops like expected ( see Tony Brown) or has issues. there are no guarantees.
