I heard someone use this analogy in an argument recently and it really made sense to me:

Imagine taking a class/race/group of people, not teaching them even the basics like how to read or exist in a free capitalistic society, and dump them out of a bucket into society and say ‘ok, coexist with us and climb your way out of generations of slavery into productive members of society’.

That’s what we did with blacks when they were freed. It’s easy to look past this, but we cannot imagine the effect this has even on generations today.

I’ve never argued for reparations, and think practically this would be very difficult to implement, but this is worthy of consideration when you really take a look at the injustice of ‘dumping them out of a bucket’ into society with no way to feasibly get ahead.

I realized this is part of why I have compassion for injustice that unfortunately too many people lack today.

Just something to think about.

Explain dirt poor immigrants from dirt poor nations coming over and owning businesses by the 2nd generation. Think especially SE Asians, but plenty of African immigrants as well.

You made a very racist comment on the OT about black people a week or so back. Don’t act like you care. Or maybe you just forgot to log out of your alter.

You do know that you are saying that they were better off as slaves, only with more words, don't you?

It's good that this is an anonymous board.

Publicly admitting you're not bright is unbecoming.

Hmm. Can I think of any other groups who arrived in America that fit this bill and yet, did better?

Why yes, yes I can.

I can imagine it's effect.

I can also imagine the effect of liberal policies making permanent what could have been more temporary.

into society with no way to feasibly get ahead.
The blacks that HAVE succeeded stand in stark rebuttal of your assertion.

Liberals love to tell themselves they have more compassion than everyone else.

Yet. In practice, this is virtually never borne out.

of all the places to "dump" them, I would think society would be the best

I could think about buying into that argument had it happened 20 years ago. It's been 150 years. That's long enough to get acclimated. And I would argue that collectively, they were doing much better a few decades ago and have regressed due to the breakdown of the nuclear family and drugs/war on drugs.

Explain why the poverty rate among blacks was falling twice as fast before the great society as after it

Well articulated but the truth is a little deeper and blunter.

Indians were murdered in droves - now own casinos and make a helluva lot of money.

American born Japanese were rounded up and put into camps during WW2. Not a bitch or moan from them as a people group.

Blacks were enslaved nearly 200 years ago... still complain and try to beat the dead dinosaur.

there is merit to that, but blacks have gone backwards since the 60's. Entitlements destroyed the black family and culture.

You should have a bucket of history and perspective dumped on your head.
They were often captured by fellow Africans for their own gains.
They were sold to Americans by many different nations. They were freed by guns and blood. Hundreds of people and organizations came into the south to help and educate. Many chose to leave and start new in the west and the north. Many chose to stay and find some land of their own to work.

Bucket dump analogy is for simpletons.

Well, there were some people that wanted to educate the slaves, but unfortunately, they lost the war. So, masses of uneducated workers that relied solely on their masters for subsistence were unleashed on the South. Which is exactly what the North wanted in order to weaken the South. You can thank Lincoln and his authoritarian regime for that. Throw in Reconstruction and the newly freed blacks had very little chance to improve in life.

That problem does not exist in modern America, though. Everyone has the opportunity to succeed if they just work hard enough.

Generally, what we call this is the soft bigotry of low expectations. The claim is, "How could the African American ever get ahead?" I'd like to think that most people don't think so little of the industry and rich culture of African American people.

Are you saying black people are more stupid than white people and are incapable of learning?
