Your top 5 films of the year...

Mine, in order
1) Florida Project: about 20 minutes into it, I thought this was shaping up to be the film that "Tangerine" tried to be, but somewhat failed (still a good movie). Found out after that it was directed by the same guy. Heartbraking and charming at the same time, and VERY real. A lot of background folk and minor actors were actually living in the motel that it was filmed. Some will hate the ending but I loved it. The standout movie in a year with a bunch of good movies, but only two great ones. The best movie since Whiplash, IMO.

2) Three Billboards: not as funny as In Bruges, but probably a better overall film (and quite a bit better than the just-above-average 7 Psychopaths). McDormand will get the well deserved accolades, but Harrelson's performance/character will be the one I first think of when I think of this movie. I think it's even with Hell or High Water and La la Land last year, and better than any of the 2016 films.

Honorable Mention: Lady Bird, Killing of a Sacred Deer, Call Me By Your Name, Shot Caller
Don't mean to cheat with honorable mentions, but very little separation between any of them.
Notable films I haven't seen: Shape of Water, The Square, Darkest Hour

shite, I forgot Logan and Big Sick came out this year. Those two should have been HM's.
And FYI, there are screeners or decent cams out for each of the films I listed, so I'd check out Florida Project if it's not playing in your area (it probably isn't). Only movie I saw in theaters was Blade Runner, which I liked a lot but fell just short of being list worthy.

Good to know. Gonna have to check out Florida Project. Plan on seeing The Shape of Water in theater in the next few days and the Disaster Artist if it’s still playing. I saw Blade Runner in the Dolby cinema and it was awesome, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t resonate as much watching at home. Same with Dunkirk

Blade Runner 2049 is probably my favorite movie from this year.
Three Billboards, good as it is, is not in the same class as Hell or High Water IMO.

I'll have to re-watch both back-to-back to make the decision, but it's definitely in the same class IMO. But I can think of two scenes from Billboards that I like more than any scene from HoHW.

Gotcha. It has no business winning best picture or getting any major actor/actress wins, but with a 2nd tier heavy (IMO) it could get some nominations.
