I'm on day 3 of the 16:8 IF program. I used the Lean Gains macro calculator to get my numbers, and I just can't wrap my head around consuming that many carbs on days that I work out (I'm 5'7, 200 FFS). So I'm hitting my proteins and fats, but staying way, way lower on the carb front.
I work out at lunch every day, so my eating window is 1:30-8:30. I've been taking 10G of BCAA's in the 20 minutes prior to my workout and I am drinking 2 cups of coffee sweetened with splenda in the morning.
So far, so good. The morning and evening aspect of the fast are easy for me. My problem is waking up with my 6 month old at 2:30 AM, where I typically would grab a handful of cookies or some other shitty snack that my 3 year old eats.
I'll keep everyone posted.
you can sub in fats for some of those carbs.
Look LG is setup to be the optimal way of eating using the caloric and macro cycling, but the main thing that you should focus on is
1) hitting the fasting time, atleast
2) hitting calorie goal
3) hitting protein
anything else is lagniappe and makes up about 2% of your progress over the long haul.

Not according to Dr. Rhonda Patrick. She was saying the studies show that anything other than water that makes the liver produce enzymes lessens the effects of the fast. Which lessens the fat loss/muscle gain side of it. I'm doing the 16:8 as well but only water during If. According to her, I even have to wait to do my vitamins and EC stack when I break fast.
I mean, I know it works if you drink coffee, because shite I've done it. Just wanted to share that info because it surprised me too.
yea i read and listened to some of her stuff and I believe she is 100% correct. Its just how strict do you want to get, especially when you are lifting like martin does.

It’s interesting. Rhonda Patrick definitely super bright. But lots of people do a wide variety of IF and ketosis and still do caffeine. I remember hearing her talk about the no coffee during fast deal on Tim Ferris show. I’m sure there is science to support it, but I seem to do okay with black coffee on my fasts. That being said: main purpose of my fasting is caloric restriction not all the autophagy of precancer and other more holistic stuff. It’s just an easy diet. I have been considering working in a 5 day water fast once or twice a year (for the autophagy and other possible holistic benefits), but I haven’t sacked up and done it yet.

Yea that's where I first heard her. Yeah my if is more about body comp. I like the other benefits and am still not convinced you don't get some of those with with coffee.
I'm gonna do a 72 hour water fat in a couple weeks, that's as far as I will go with the IF

Just finished my first week. Doesn’t seem too bad. I drink plenty of water and one cup of black coffee to satiate my stomach until lunch. How long should a IF cycle last?

Forever, it's just a way of eating.
Posted on 2/24/18 at 5:05 pm to lsu777
Oh. Okay haha
I’m guessing it’s easier once I become adjusted. I am eating less overall, so that’s good.

What are your thoughts on having black coffee with Splenda during Fast? There are so many contradicting beliefs. I’ve also read that Liqiud Splenda would be better than the packets, no idea if that has any merit.
Also, my SO wants to start again with me, and she is wanting to use Walden Farms Creamer in her coffee. Who knows what that stuff is made of, but it has no caloric content, so it would potentially be ok. Although I suppose it could trigger an insulin response.
Appreciate your thoughts!

Basic rules of thumb for body composition is fast must contain less than 30 Cal's. All non caloric items are fine.
Now this is from the body comp side of things only. I believe the healthy benefits really come from nothing consumed but water.

I'm starting Kino Greek God soon, so I just wanted to get your thoughts.
Once I start program, I'll report back too.

I usually break fast at 11:30 during weekdays.
On weekends when I fast until 12:30 or 1:00 I feel like a million bucks and 10 lbs lighter.
Funny how the brain works.

Yea I haven't eaten in 26 hours and feel great.

Honestly it wasn't planned, just haven't been hungry all day and I have been busy meal prepping, washing clothes, cleaning the a house etc, in general just making sure we are ready to start the week.
And I'm lifting right now and still feel great. I'll eat after I left. I don't always do this but feel great when I do especially in days like today where I never get hungry.

Anyone have experience with alternate day/one day fasting? Do you find it incredibly hard?
Lately I've kinda been blowing my weekday deficit by drinking/eating poorly on the weekend. With festival season and vacations coming up, I need a way to meet calorie goals while still enjoying these events. Obviously, I've done unplanned whole day fasting (sick, hungover, busy running errands, etc.) but I'm unsure how it would go on a normal day when I have a normal appetite and am just sitting around.
I'm seeing stuff online about alternate day fasting where you eat day 1, fast day 2, eat day 3, and so on. I'm not so sure I'd want to do it quite that much each week, especially since I don't think I'd eat enough on feeding days to make that math work out in a healthy way. But maybe 1 or 2 days per week. Essentially trying to offset the ~2 days a week I go way too deep into the calorie dense food and beer.

Honestly as a female you really shouldnt fast more than 14 hours. Well it's not a set in stone rule but many women develop issues with hormones when fasting longer than that often so whatever you choose, work up to it.

I’ve been doing 18-20 hrs on the weekdays. Feeling great.

Well.. oh well I guess. I haven't eaten breakfast since middle school, and I eat dinner no later than 7pm most days.
Looking into that - it looks like it is currently inconclusive. Some women experience issues, some don't. But that is definitely something to keep in mind if stretching my IF to be a much larger window.
1 day every other week or picking a day to fast on a week where I know the weekend will be full of food would be nice if my body responds fine to it. Basically a "lazy" way to maintain the same overall weekly average, but with the ability to partake in festivals/social events.

I did IF really seriously when I was lifting full time a few years ago and it's the real deal. I will say that even though I have not been able to do gym as much lately I have kept one thing constant, which is IF. It's a complete bitch to turn this into so much of a habit that your body finally quits worrying you about it, but it will come with time. Now, I can pretty much do any 12-14 hour stretch without any caloric intake(as long as I did enough before time starts), but I usually just stick with no food after 8-10PM and not before 10AM.

If anyone is serious about losing weight, but are unsure of what works, I can't recommend the combination of IF (OMAD) and low carb diet enough.
OMAD
Are you Jimmy?
Some days I can go until about 2 or 3pm but then I usually eat again at 6pm.
