My landlord sent the complex a message telling us to let our faucets drip to avoid pipes freezing in the cold weather.

Does this really work?

Or is it just a ploy to increase payment on water bills?

I don't want to end up like that guy from yesterday with a $3,000 bill.

you think letting your faucet drip overnight is going to increase your water bill to 3 grand?

Do you know what a drip is? You think letting your faucets drip overnight is going to spike your bill more than like taking a random extra shower?

you mean, does it allow a very slow but steady amount of water to flow through the pipes to decrease the odds of them bursting in freezing weather?

Can you envision any scenario where that would "not work"?

Yes it works.

Should you do it? No, you should be fine.

Why would it benefit the land lord? Wouldn't your water be included with your rent (standard fee), or you pay for your own utilities.

You could leave it dripping for a year and it wouldn't be $3000 of usage.

Also, you don't own the place, so it's not really your problem if pipes burst.

Make sure you leave a light on too. I would hate for your electricity to freeze up.

At least you realize your limitations and have continued to rent. Homeownership probably will be out of your reach for sometime from both a cognitive and financial perspective.

Letting them drip avoids the expansion of the freezing water. So, yes it works. You shouldn't have to worry about this unless you are dealing with a hard freeze 20 and below. Just dipping below 32 isn't goinf to cause pipes to burst.

It's a good tip but I take it one step further and run my sprinklers between 4 and 5 AM. Does it create a hazard because I point the stems toward the street? Of course not. The kids and commuters love it.
