Why does TLJ actually surprise anyone? This is what Star Wars always does.

Say why you will about SJW casting and all that stuff, but I saw literally dozens of small girls with their hair like Rey, with plastic lightsabers and branded outfits and toys. I saw double the amount of boys in various outfits and masks.

Disney, for better or worse, did something that has young girls enjoying these newer movies. You can bitch and Moan all you want, but you should probably realize that Disney isn’t making the films for old arse fan boys (of which I proudly one) any more, they are making it (as has always been the case) to sell toys to children.

Hope and pray that they make the one-off movies as more fan service to the older generation. But the mainline trilogies aren’t about making you happy any more. I would have thought this would be totally obvious to anyone who has even somewhat followed the series as a whole, but y’all are acting like someone just shot your dog.

This series has always been about merchandizing, and I think they knocked it out of the park, hate that all you want, but it cannot possibly be a surprise.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force. As if millions of downvotes were headed toward you and I should upvote you immediately.

Yeah, but can’t they make all that money AND make a good Star Wars movie?

Who is “they”? Certainly isn’t the “they” that made this movie, did you expect the same result?

Here is the deal. I knew going in there would be a lot of sjw stuff in the movie. I could have dealt with that if they would have just made a competent fricking movie.

The story is broken at a fundamental level due to the writing. Also the choices they made as far as the direction to go are just mind boggling stupid.

I don’t know who he’s talking about but I’m assuming it includes some of the people that made the OT great while selling millions of action figures.

I’m that case, there are still a few involved all these years later. It’s just that the boss has changed.

Except there are plenty of children's movies that are high quality, meaningful, and more universal than just for kids. Some even touch on profound positive moments be they emotional, wonderous, etc.

Does Disney set out to make films where kids are a core part of the audience? Sure.
Do they make sure to include monetization strategies beyond the film by way of merchandise? Sure.
Do all movies aimed at such goals have to be bad? No.

If you are saying that Disney set out to make a bad film, you're wrong. And Johnson's comments show he at least had some autonomy in crafting it beyond Disney's desires.

If you are saying that Disney doesn't care what audiences think as long as they make money and sell toys, you are correct.

I don’t disagree about the writing, but every part I saw that I asked myself “why the frick did they add this?” I could see merchandising behind it, OR (see casino planet) setting up small children as force users, rebel sympathizers, which will bring more kid eyes in next movie. It may have been horrid storytelling, but they don’t give a frick.

Who has said anything bad about Rey? That is not the issue people are having with this film. Rey is sure as hell a better role model than say Ariel.

But then there is Rose, who makes all the wrong decisions in this movie, and telling the audience that she's right and if you disagree you're a bigot. She is a Maoist "holier than thou" bitch. Rose stops Finn from sacrificing himself for the Greater Good, and if Luke and Rey hadn't shown up, then they will not only soon die but get everyone else stupidly and selfishly killed.

Well they've given the older generation a direct "frick You" with this movie. frick what you thought about the series, because I'm going to let a fat asian chick womansplain to you why mansplaining is bad and animal rights is worth getting thousands of people killed. The characters you love are all going to have unsatisfactory deaths. We're moving in a completely different direction. That's the new Star Wars.

Rey isn't the issue. She never has been. Even the most ubergeek scifi nerd has no issue pulling for a female main character....if it makes sense. See: Aliens and Weaver.

Rose and Holdo are nothing more than SJW charactictures. And it's blatantly obvious. They contribute ZERO to the main plot. Nothing. At all.

I just got out and holy shite, THAT was the movie grown arse men on this board are literally melting about? I was watching it waiting for it to live up to its "worst garbage ever filmed" billing and never once thought it. Was waiting to be bombared with "SJW bullshite" and never saw it. Good Lord, a black guy (a main character from the previous movie nonetheless) and an Asian girl?? And that's what a bunch mouthbreathers on here are crying about?

Don't get me wrong, it isn't the best Star Wars movie by any means. But I was expecting Baby Geniuses in Space from reading this board. It was entertaining. It seemed like a normal Star Wars movie. And the funny thing, I don't think the melt will stop anytime soon. And people say the Soccer Board is the most embarrassing board on TD

But but muh nostalgia, muh empire strikes back

Yeah toys didn't start rolling off the shelf for Star Wars until it had long been a huge hit...

And therefore, most of the toys were for Empire.

Then Jedi and Ewoks went full retard on ACTUALLY targeting the movie for kids and toys.

Disney, yes - that's what they do, they sell merchandise for little girls who want to be Princesses. They especially target little girls - look at all their Animated movies, Sleeping Beauty, Pocohantus, Mulan, Alladin, Tiana, etc.

But that's no justification...if you enter a franchise, you owe a duty to be faithful to that franchise...not just make a Disney movie and slap a Star Wars logo on it.

I think most would like Disney to get out of the Star Wars business since they aren't even going to try altering their long-standing model.

I'm as anti liberal as they come. Wtf movie did you guys watch? Reading up this board to this movie, you would think every single good guy in the movie was a purple haired, gender fluid minority, and every single bad guy was a clean-cut white dude. Like, what is the appropriate white guy-non white guy ratio is the board looking for in a fricking science fiction movie?

zomg they had the audacity to add an asian girl!

A movie that had a character that preached about how evil rich people are, that selling weapons is bad, and condemning animal abuse implying jockeys are evil. It also says that said character is morally justifiable when she saves Finn from committing a selfless act of sacrifice all because she wanted the BBC, putting everyone else in mortal peril. Like that being the "Worst Planet Ever". Imagine if she had said the same thing to Rey and what her reaction would have been.

Are you blind, deaf, or both to have missed this?

This movie is fricking horrible. It has nothing to do with being a fanboy. Every character we have left is totally weak thanks to the writing.

Kylo - he just got whipped by Rey who had no training in the last movie. Now he is the big bad.

Rey- still no Jedi training. I guess she will just figure it out on her own.

Poe- incompetent traitor, but he flies well.

Finn- hate every moment he is on screen.

Rose- ditto

Hux- Whiny and completely incompetent

Snoke- They broke their own rules to make this character and then didn't even explain it. This would be like GOT having Jon Snow suddenly start shooting fireballs from his hands and giving no explanation.

Luke- We waited 35 years to see the most powerful Jedi being a bitch on an island.

I will stop here but could keep going.

The only way someone even remotely thinks about these things while watching fricking Star Wars is if someone goes in with their conservative values on the mind. You saw SJW bullshite because you went in expecting SJW bullshite. The selling weapons thing literally never once crossed my mind until you brought it up just now.
