Golden Retrievers as so lovable and sweet looking - I don't think I could deal easily with euthanizing one that wasn't mine.

Best thing for the pups. The vet will give you sedatives to give the dog prior to his arrival. My dog was snuggled in her bed, never knew what was happening.

plus, unless my buddy mellows out more about the vet, I don't want him terrified going in there

I understand. My daughter, a Vet does this for some people that has been using her services.
