Since NN is a big topic today I have a question about ISPs.

Why won't municipalities get into the ISP business?

For example my municipality provides natural gas. They laid their own natural gas service lines throughout our town. What is preventing them to lay their own fiber and become an internet service provider to the townspeople?

A bunch of them have, actually. They are stakeholders in local providers.

Surprisingly, it doesn't reduce costs.....

I get it, but the last thing I want is to rely on shitty local municipalities to take care of my internet, especially in this state. These assholes can't even fill potholes properly and promptly.

Usually the telecoms will bribe the statehouse to pass laws restricting them. San Antonio has a state of the art fiber network for its government buildings but they're literally outlawed from offering it to the public.

Because many don't even adequately fund their own networks, can you imagine how they would fare running an ISP?

With that said though, Lafayette has their shite together.

There is LUS as many have pointed out and there are a couple of cities in Texas that got in before the Texas legislature outlawed municipals from providing that service. They are grandfathered now.

The ISP lobby did a good job protecting their turf.

I have municipal internet in Lafayette (LUS Fiber). It's great. I'm getting like 100 mbps for $50ish a month.

I've also been on the bad side. I lived in a rural Ohio shithole where satellite internet was the only option and we paid $120/mo for 20 mbps but only ever got 2-3 mbps.
