Ford Motor Co. plans to end North American production of the Fusion midsize sedan at the end of the decade, Automotive News has learned, casting doubt about the future of the nameplate in the U.S. as consumers shun cars for crossovers and SUVs.

The automaker has begun informing suppliers that it will not build the next-generation Fusion at its plant in Hermosillo, Mexico, where the car is currently made, according to sources familiar with the discussions. It’s unclear whether Ford would stop selling the Fusion in the U.S., replace it with a different vehicle, or build it elsewhere.

Kind of surprising. I think this was the most popular Ford sedan in the US.

Suppliers have been told Ford also plans to stop producing the Mondeo at a plant in Valencia, Spain.

Ford is in the midst of reviewing its entire product portfolio under new CEO Jim Hackett. Executives in October said Ford would offer fewer car nameplates but did not offer specifics.

Chrysler recently ended production of the 200 mid sized sedan as well.

Actually the Explorers have been leaking Carbon Monoxide into the cabin because of widespread exhaust manifold leaks.

I doubt they cancel the Fusion and are more likely to realign plants and production capacity.

Mid size sedans are dying. Its either small compacts (fiesta/focus) or SUVs.

I think the Fusion outsells the Fiesta and Focus, although that could change if gas prices increase.

Is the Camry not still the number one selling car in the US? And Toyota just expanded the Camry line this year.

Then buy the Expedition because you have more air to breath.

Fusion is decent.

Maybe you are thinking about everything else Ford makes?

Toyota has been dumping the Camry onto fleet, rental, and taxi sales to maintain that status.

Wouldn't shock me if the Honda Accord was the most popular on the retail side.

Honda and Mazda just revamped their Mid Size sedans as well.

I see tons of mid-sized sedans on the road everyday.

When Lamborghini decides to put out a crossover, you know they're here to stay.

Yes but car sales are dwarfed by trucks. The top 3 selling vehicles are F-series, Silverado and RAM.
