I'm guilty... I flick the cherry, then pluck the butt 
I used to think they are biodegradable but when you pull up at a traffic light and look on the ground, it's hard to see the asphalt due to plethora of cigarette butts on the roadway.

A Cajun that worked for me years ago had a flat tire and plugged it with two cig. butts....tire man said I haven't seen that one yet.
