Have friends and relatives in the north that have been clearing there windshields with hot water my entire life, never heard of any glass being damaged.

I admit when I was culture shocked and had to live up North. I used water from the kitchen sink as hot as it could get and it worked. (I don't think boiled water would be wise)

Last time there was a hard freeze in BR a few years ago I personally witnessed old neighbors completely frick their windshield up with huge cracks and shattering by pouring hot (boiling) water on their windshield. Doing a Google search seems to have conflicting information, but I'm going to go with what I personally saw happen.
