Having #5 and #6 bitching about being left out is entirely different than #17 and #18 being left out.
Going to 16 won't make it stop either.

The teams playing in those bowl games are playing in that game only, not that game and then potentially two more a couple weeks later. Those games are also not populated by teams that participate in high level recruiting.

Go to 6.
5 power conference champions get in plus one at large.
That way, the only bitching is about the at large spot. The path to the other 5 spots is clear and taken out of the hands of the committee.
Use BCS type rankings to determine seeding and then run the playoffs like the NFL. Top two seeds get byes. You could even keep the bowl game host sites, though it would be the best sporting event on earth if they allowed the higher seeds to host the playoff games through the first two rounds. Campuses would be straight up rocking. Then play the National Championship at a rotating spot like the Super Bowl.

Doing away with conference championship games + expanding the field to 8 (with the higher seeds hosting the quarters) is the best of both worlds... championship games have outlived their usefulness.
The quarterfinal matchups this year would be fantastic... way better than the championship games we got last weekend.

Another way to do it is just use the division winners (using P5 only)
So you would have had
Miami
Clemson
USC
Stanford
tOSU
Wisconsin
Auburn
Georgia
Oklahoma (BXII no divisions)
Then you take top 3 teams left over from there to fill to 12, but the conferences wont get rid of CCG.
You can also have the conferences declare their rep will be X before the season, either winner of regular season, highest rated, winner of CCG, then build one that way.

Yes, you get rewarded for being #1.
Who makes that decision? The same committee that is currently under fire? Now you're just giving an additional platform for people to bitch about.
You've gone from people bitching about who got left out of the top 4 to people bitching about who got left out of the playoffs due to shifting criteria AND people bitching about which team got the benefit of getting an extra weeks rest.
Your idea could work in some years, but this year is a perfect example of this hypothetical being a complete disaster. You've got three clear cut teams (Clemson/UGA/Oklahoma) and one just on the outside looking in (Alabama). By your measure it's now a three team playoff and all three contenders have almost identical resumes. Who gets the bye and why? There would be chaos for leaving Bama out and then even more chaos for giving one of those teams a bye.

Sadly, this is true.

Using the Power 5 division winners +3 model it would look like...
9. Penn St vs 8. USC, winner plays 1. Clemson
12. Stanford vs 5. Wisconsin, winner plays 4. Alabama
10. Miami vs 7. Auburn, winner plays 2. Oklahoma
11. Washington vs 6. Wisconsin, winner plays 3. Georgia
That would be a fantastic bracket IMO

4 super conferences of 20 teams each, 10 teams in each division. Play round robin in your division and the division Champs get in the playoffs.

I just do not like the idea of forcing someone into a conference though. Television has made the conferences and taken away some great games because of it. If you want to be an independent you can be.
Look at SMU Rice and Houston, they were in a Power Conference before the current economic climate. Houston everyone wants to be in one except the people that matter. Tulsa was a power player before the new television era.
I just think keep it as is, in regards to conference affiliation, let the individual school decide.

The SEC could really step up and cement the 9 conference game schedule. We could validate it even though we'd be late af to it.
I get this argument, I really do. But certain members of the SEC and ACC will never vote for it because of rivals.
Expanding to 9 games puts USCe, Clemson, UGA, GT, UF, FSU, UK, and Louisville in a tough spot.
Several of those teams have it mandated in state legislature that they play an instate lower tier team.
Going to 9 games would result in USCe schedule every year being 9 SEC games, Clemson, Citadel (Wofford, PC, Furman, etc.). You will never see one of those teams schedule a big OOC game anymore in that last spot.
Hell, as it is, those teams already schedule better than most other teams OOC with the exception of Florida.

So how does Iowa and Iowa St do it? They are mandated to play UNI. IS there a law that says LSU and Carolina play in states and UK/Louisville have to play yearly?
I mean you are going to get the extra bump from your conference. So instead of playing 2 bad teams or lower divisions play 1.
USC and UCLA have never played a FCS team, play 9 conference games, and play huge inter-sectional games with rivalries.

Yeah because having 5 Power Conferences and only 4 available slots makes a lot of sense.

If they go to 8, they need to nuke CCGs so the loser doesn't get punked by teams sitting at home for the at-large bids. But, I don't know how you decide conference champs in a 14 team league that can't do round robin.
Posted on 12/8/17 at 10:37 am to Bench McElroy
I think they are wrong. With conference playoffs in place, 8 team playoff is the maximum it should ever be.

No, but those schools aren’t bitches like Texas and A&M. There would be blood in the streets if those games were cancelled.
And look at Iowa’s OOC schedule, that will give you your answer about the Iowa and ISU schedules. They’re absolute trash.

I feel like in no way can we remove CCGs...but CCGs are kinda BS when Bama benefits from not playing while Wisky gets punished for playing.
It just seems like something that can't be fixed without stepping on something else and devaluating that thing.

I didn't say anything would stop the bitching, but adding a new dynamic for people to get upset about at this point is ridiculous. It's bad enough already.

They are trash?
Iowa plays Iowa St mandated and 9 conference games,
Look at SEC equal they play same type of schedule.

It's bad enough already.
If it's going to changed, a new dynamic has to be added...people will bitch about that dynamic. So that's why the argument against any system being "people will bitch" doesn't really work because as you said there's no alternative where people won't bitch.
