The latest forecast released this week shows the $12.5 billion government-financed health program may spend as much as $650 million less than projected for the budget year that began July 1. Most of that amount will be unused federal spending authority — not dollars that can be allocated to other state government programs and services. But the Department of Health says about $30 million of the amount, if the trends remain on track, would be a state general fund surplus that could be spent elsewhere in state government.

Tuozzolo credited expansion with driving people to cheaper primary care services and providing improved access to care for people who were previously uninsured. He said the health department hopes the under-budget numbers "will give people confidence this can be run stably."

Amazing what happens when people get access to primary care instead of flooding the ER. But what do I know, I’m only 4 years out of medical school.

So you have a vested interest with your hand in that revenue stream.

Conflict of interest duly noted.

I think all of us know that that projection will never hold up. They will find something to spend any potential surplus on and turn it into a deficit before you can say "primary care physician".

Indeed. I would gladly take a pay cut to have single payer system and be a doctor who doesn’t have their hands tied by insurance companies. Insurance companies suck billions out the health care industry in profits without providing any services. You understand that is a problem right?

Care to cite any evidence that Medicaid is reducing ER usage?

Actually, I'll save you the time, you don't have ANY data showing this is because ER usage is down

You saw the headline and assumed the thing causing it was something your bias supports.

The government does the same thing. That is why I favor abolishing all insurance and going to a direct consumer pays model paired with 100% tax deductible HSA's.

So our states health care system succeeding makes you so uncomfortable you just choose to deny it. It’s okay for Louisiana to get something right for once.

Four years out of medical school

you don’t know or understand anything. You’re hardly even a doctor.

Shocked, that's what big gov does best, spend every dollar not as originally stated.

See above.

No, I just know how this state works. DOTD was supposed to have a surplus last year too. Once the department heads found that out, they started just buying massive quantities of tires, despite the fact that they had already purchased their annual allotment for tires. They were trying to make sure they didn't come under budget so that they could lobby for more money at next year's legislative session and avoid having their budget cut.

This isn't some crazy isolated occurrence, but standard operating procedure in Louisiana's state government.

If we become single payer, your income will shrink to near nothing. There is absolutely no way you do your own billing if you'd rather be reimbursed by the government.

So I get a return check for a percentage of what I paid in without my consent that is going to be unused?

Every business would love to have its account receivables risk mitigated by government payment guarantees.

It worked great for government backed mortgages, because after all housing like healthcare is a human right.

They're a jobs program. They siphon money off of the economy to pay tens of thousands of public union employees.

Medicare and Medicaid then bankrupt hospitals by not baying full reimbursement rates for their patients.

They're government entitlements, and pretty mediocre ones at that.
