I don’t know how long Clemson has called its stadium Death Valley. LSU’s Tiger Stadium has been called that for at least 50 years, but I don’t know if that was something LSU used officially or if the sobriquet was something used only by the media and fans.

Clemson's history is very clear and well documented. LSU's is less. Although and take it for what it's worth, there are documented 'Death Valley' Reveille references going back to the 40's. The first Times Picayune reference we could find was in 1960 and it was used all through the 60's. For context, it was almost always in reference to what Les Miles resurfaced as 'Where opponents dreams come to die'. Interestingly, besides gas station ads, there were no Deaf Valley references during either of those time periods.

Yes, the PMAC 'Deaf Dome' moniker, is what has caused the crossover and to some, confusion. Regardless of where, when and why, Clemson embraced Death Valley and understands its relative history. Case in point and hypothetically, if they began to call their basketball stadium the 'Deaf Dome', no Clemson fans would confuse or disremember the distinction.

To be sure, there would be some folks who could not respond with an actual answer. ...just like here...but there would also be others actually trying to give an answer and history...like Tigermall and lickitty split.

Go Tigers!!!

Dude, I have followed college football since I can remember. Really started in '88/89. I KNOW LSU tried to call their place DEAF valley (because it was/is so loud)...never....NEVER heard Tiger Stadium refered to as anything other until about 4/5 yrs ago on College Gameday.

And you've followed college football since 1989 and didn't realize LSU used that nickname until 4 or 5 years ago? Obviously, you didn't follow too closely then.

LSU Tiger Stadium is technically known as The Real Death Valley.

When did Clemson start playing that shitty version of Tiger Rag?

(Hint: LSU first used it in 1926, far long before Clemson)

Seems like every team with a tiger mascot plays it. I know Mizzou does, as does Memphis, and I've heard Princeton does as well.

I've never heard Tiger Stadium referred to as Deaf Valley until I came on to this site (and I've been following the Tigers since the late 1960's). The PMAC was called the Deaf Dome at one time, but that's about it.

It was called Deaf Valley in the 80's when I was there. Somewhere in the late 80s it went to....or back to being called Death Valley because everyone one thought we were saying "Death Valley" anyway.....hard to understand those cajun accents. About the same time a douchebag had a hit with a song called "Eye of the Tiger" and so we had to go all "pop reference" and put that gawd-awful eye logo on our field.

They stopped referring to it as Deaf Valley when fans started clearing out at halftime.

Most people on here from what I've read think that you came on here or started this thread to frick with them. Lol I myself have to ask why would your first time be about a topic like this, and around this time of the year too?? LSU has no upcoming bowl game against y'all, I thought you'd be more prone to hang out on the Gump's sites and frick with them. Lol

but really most of us LSU fans didn't start calling the stadium Death Valley imo, anyways. I think a lot of outsiders did and got it crossed up with y'alls stadium, but LSU is still worthy of it even though I do think Deaf Valley is much more fitting. But LSU goes by both, so either way I don't find it no big deal. And I'll tell you something else that I think is true, you can thank LSU for where you guys are today because of that Chick-Fil-a bowl game I think that was played awhile back in Atlanta. Y'all barely won that game against an always ever so predictable Les Miles coached LSU team with his 1970's style smash mouth offense that he ran. Your DC knew what he was gonna do like everyone else was starting to figure out around that time, and y'all won a hard fought game and realized you could play with the big boys. But it turned Dabo's and you guys program around, congrats on what y'all have done since then.

I'm right behind you at 55 and remember it being more Deaf Valley than Death, but like I said LSU is worthy of being called both because a lot of foes except for Bama as of late have perished there.

This replaced the underwhelming sign under the West upper deck.

Since my first game in Tiger Stadium in the early 80's, this sign is what's been in there and what the stadium has been called. Never heard anyone call it Deaf Valley, but they can be easily interchanged and thus confused. Don't know when that sign was put in the stadium or when we first started calling our stadium Death Valley...

I was first called Deaf Valley years back in the 50's or 60's and it naturally just morphed into Death Valley. The stadium has been called Deaf or Death since it opened in 1924. It has been Death Valley for the 46 years of my life, so it has never changed. The change took place before I was born in the early 1970s. Also, it never rains in Death Valley, so there is that as well becuase it never rains in Tiger Stadium. You may get the occasional stiff dew, but never rain.We also have the Deaf Dome which is the PMAC, but it has been quiet for a long time since Dale Brown retired. We also have Alex box Stadium which is pronounced Alec Box Stadium; insiders and only locals know why.

That is one of the best mid-field logos in College football.

Thank you to everyone that responded with some actual insight as to why/when...this was not meant as a derogatory question. I went back and re-read my original post and see how it could be construed as such.
I am a Clemson Tiger, but root for/like a lot of different teams when they are not playing my Tigers. I know it is kind of odd that I came and posted when I did; like I said previously, it was started after reading a post "tale of two Tigers". Clemson and LSU have played three times...yall have won two and all REALLY close games. Would LOVE a home&home series...but sure it won't happen anytime soon.

Go (and geaux) Tigers!!!

I am in my mid-50s and the "Welcome to Death Valley" sign that was below the old west upper deck (it has since been removed) had been around as long as I can remember. It was there in the late 70s when I was attending LSU and I'll bet it was there a lot longer than that.
