Same group of posters who laughed at the former "rumor" refused to believe it until it actually happened, said all the same things that they are saying now, etc.

Everyone involved in the UT program is hinting at it, mods on all UT sites are saying it is in the works, yet people refuse to even ponder it happening.

Some of it is fear of the backlash if they predict him to coach and being wrong.

If it's happening good for the Vols. They get a big hire finally and will most likely make an instant jump in recruiting and perception.
I just find it difficult to believe because the guy has flaked on them before, and he could do it again.

Unless Gruden thinks he is going to be included in the next round of layoffs it's two completely different situations.

I think gruden is playing both sides. ESPN has lost millions of subscribers, so will they be able to keep him any longer. It's a matter of timing for Tenn.

Refusal to believe that it'll matter much. He's been out of coaching too long. Who even knows if his game will translate over to college. Will he recruit at a decent level? He's just a name at this point.

They would be much better off chasing some current college coaches. Find the guy they want and offer 10 mil a year. I'm ready to see Tennessee mentioned in the same sentence as championship.

ETA: I'd consider Lane again, but only if options 1-3 say no.

Even if ESPN announced today that MNF was going away, it doesn't stop NFL Network from picking it up and offering him similar money to change jackets.

My favorite myth about Gruden (other than that he's some idiot who only won because Dungy put together a superteam), is that he has turned down Tennessee four times.

I agree that the circumstances are drastically different.

Harbaugh was a couple of years removed from 3 deep playoff runs and a Superbowl appearance.

Gruden hasn't coached in damn near 10 years and he wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire when he was on the sideline. He guided a team that Tony Dungy built and won one Superbowl with arguably a top 10 all time defense with multiple Hall of Famers.

Since then we can say that he is good at evaluating talent but I think that's hard to argue that he's elite at that.

At best he will bring attention back to the program and bring in some recruits who want to play for a former Superbowl wining coach.

Who cares if a big name that has been out of football for 10 years goes to Tennessee? Great! Let’s see it. Harbaugh was immediately relevant.

People who understand what's going on at ESPN know it could happen, but it's still:

A) more likely he'll go back to the NFL

B) A fools gold hire even if you got him

It screams "winning the press conference" hire

Gruden hasn't coached in years. How is this anywhere close to the same? Stupid argument is stupid.

I think most people at least thought that Harbaugh to Michigan was in the realm possibility because of his connections to the school, being the whole “Michigan Man” thing, and not being too far removed from coaching college.

Gruden hasn’t coached at any level in ten years, and other than a one year stint as GA, a wife who was a cheerleader there, and a son who chose to go to college there, Gruden himself doesn’t that binding connection to Tennesseee like Harbaugh does to Michigan.

Not saying it won’t happen, but the situations aren’t exactly the same.

plus he was in a public dispute with management in SF

he was going to have to find a home regardless

i'm curious about this Gruden thing. his time away from the NFL may help him, b/c his big issue at teh end of his time in TB was insisting on a complicated WCO that his QBs had issues with combined with a rotating set of QBs. maybe he will go into college with a better understanding of why a simpler offense is better.

if Gruden goes to UTenn, it's going to be interesting for sure. ihave no idea how it's going to turn out

i wouldnt doubt this yes he has interest in the Vols job but he and his agent are putting out all this info to pressure some NFL jobs to make a move as well. Maybe even a return to the Buccs. He likes Jameis and said he will only go back to a team that has a franchise QB.
