Would you feel the same way if the tables were turned and the Dems had the bad candidate and wanted to cancel or postpone?

The Dems have forced candidates out before. Robert Torricelli in NJ.
Of course their timing was better.

The people of Alabama get to decide who their senator is.

Not the media.
Not the national political parties.

A party forcing a candidate out is a little bit different than canceling or postponing an election.

If Ivey wants to be the next Gov she won't stick her nose in this.

Anyway, I don't know why she decided to hold a quick special election in the first fricking place. She should have just let Luther serve out the rest of Jeff's term.

It helped clear Moore out of the Governor’s race for her.

How would cancelling the special election hurt Ivey's gubernatorial chances?

Optics

She wants to nullify Moore's chance. She would go down in absolute flames to whomever ran against her.

She would be subverting the will of the voters of Alabama if she stuck her nose in this election now.

So can she,or can't she, call off or cancel the special election? I've heard she can, and I've heard she can't because early or absentee voting has begun.

Haven't heard definitively if the Governor has that power.

I just heard the state attourney general on the radio say that if the republican party decides to formally say they don't want Roy Moore to be their candidate then the election will still happen but if he wins then the entire election becomes void. The whole process starts over. However, if Jones or a write in candidate win then it stands.

The only power she has is to name the day. She has done that. There is no provision for her to change that day. State code says that a special election must be held before the next session of Congress so that Alabama doesn't lose representation.

They have until 74 days before the election to change the candidate. After that tough shite.

What I posted came directly from the state attorney general. I will take his word over yours

You people are pathetic. You're perfectly content to blast Hollywood types before they're proved guilty but heaven forbid an R get accused of this shite and you turn the blind eye and deny with the quickness. It's ok to be hypocritical, but at least make an attempt to not be so biased.

Not sure why everyone is so gung ho to defend Roy Moore... this dude is a piece of shut, always has been always will be. And this is coming from a Registered Republican in Alabama.

Moore is a joke of a candidate and a blight to the national party. Him winning would be a major long term loss for the Republicans throughout the USA. We should be fricking thankful he's taking himself out of the running.

This is correct. People have already voted in this election. It can't be cancelled.

Oh. Millions will be lost, but i don't know about a suit. The power of the governor to control special elections is explicit and doesn't sovereign immunity apply?

You do realize the power to call a special election and the power to cancel a special election are two completely different things?

No chance the governor has the power to unilaterly cancel a special election unless there is some sort of a state of emergency. The ramifications of such a decision would be a destruction to our entire election system.

It's the democrats, not the republicans, who are supposed to try to not follow the rules. Despite what several of us said... this board really wanted the dipshit Moore. Y'all made that mess... y'all can own it.

This whole kerfuffle just solidified Moore's victory. Whether the allegations are valid or not, this smacks of "the establishment picking on poor Roy and trying to steal the election". Those Moore voters who may have stayed home thinking it was in the bag will be out in force now.
