We are also grilling for several hours, multiple times in a weekend. Maybe we need to clean it more, or do something that takes the least amount of time

Literally never flares.

ETA - I cook very few things that require the lid open, so I'm sure the helps.

won't help. flare ups happen due to grease being released from the meat, or any oil or other flammable marinade ingredients. there is no way to combat this other than to put more distance between the flame and the meat
