So you want meaningless non-conference games and teams resting starters?

90% of CFB games are meaningless right now. If you expand it or put qualifiers on the entry into the playoff then your "meaningless" games go away.

They wouldn't be any more meaningless than they are now.

Case in point, Ohio State got it's arse beat by OU but if the playoff teams were selected today there is a very real chance that they are in and OU is out.

1. Georgia could rest starters against Georgia Tech. It would be a meaningless game in an 8-team playoff.

2. Bama could rest starters against Auburn.

3. Ohio State could rest starters against Michigan.

Which would be stupid of them to do b/c they are not guaranteed to win their title games or get a wildcard slot.

Then make Power 5 champs automatic bids. That way Florida’s win vs. LSU last year would be huge. Way more important than what it was in the current system. Division races become more important and so do conference championships. It also effectively punishes teams like 2011 bama or 2016 Ohio State

Think about it. In a 5 auto bid system, probably 6-7 teams each year would be competing for the wild card slots.
