To help tackle billions in deferred maintenance projects, the National Park Service is proposing a massive increase in entrance fees during peak visitation season for 17 parks, including four of Utah’s Mighty Five.

The seasonal cost of admission would rise to $70 per vehicle at Bryce Canyon, Zion, Arches and Canyonlands national parks under the proposal outlined Tuesday.

“As part of our commitment to improve the visitor experience and ensure America’s national parks are protected in perpetuity, we are considering increases to fees at 17 highly visited national parks during peak visitor seasons,” NPS officials wrote in a statement Tuesday.

The fee hike would more than double the present price of admission, which is $30 per vehicle, $25 per motorcycle and $15 per individual at Zion and Bryce Canyon, and $25 per vehicle, $15 per motorcycle and $10 per individual at Arches and Canyonlands.

On one hand, I hate the idea of charging someone to enter a piece of wilderness.

On the other hand, someone willing to pay $70 to get in is unlikely to be a trashy frick who litters and doesn't know what they're doing.

A lot of the more popular parks have real issues with being too crowded at peak times right?

I don't think going to that amount is over the top or anything. It seems a little steep, but that's just based on what National Parks have always cost, not necessarily based on what they are worth.

Whole heartedly. The National Parks is one of those things i have no problem with the government doing, especially here. And paying more is fine by me.

Plus, I feel some people just go to the big parks just to go, and while that's the point, I went to Zion on Labor Day last year and I don't see how a natural protected area can handle that kind of crowd. I'd support it just to cull some people from "just going to go," and not respecting it.

The annual pass is $80. They can raise that too and I'll still get it.

I think it's already $50 to go through Grand Teton and Yellowstone..I don't care.

The people who truly enjoy the wilderness aren't paying, it's only the silly visitors.

Would certainly keep out those with no respect for nature. Could get behind this as long as the money is used appropriately

Sounds good to me. These places don't maintain themselves.

They should also end the Veterans get in free policy too.

Time people in this country break their addiction to free shite.

As long as those fees go to maintain their respective parks, then I don't have an issue.

If it's just going to get dumped into some slush fund, they can go frick themselves.

I have no problem with it.

I also think a lot of the free parks should charge entrance fees.

I know it will never happen because an entrance fee was forbidden when the park was created, but Great Smoky Mountain NP would pay for upkeep on multiple parks. I want to say it sees more than twice the number of visitors than the next closest park (Grand Canyon?).

$200, for foreign tourists.
Leave rate alone for citizens with proof of citizenship.
