The Marine Corps Marathon

We just had another edition of this fine run yesterday and I thought I'd bring you some finishing times of famous people who have run this. Maybe it will motivate you to start training.

Clarence Thomas, currently a Supreme Court Justice, ran the MCM in 1980 at age 32. He finished in a *very* good time of 3:11:00. That's about how Lance Armstrong did in the NYC Marathon and deserves serious respect.
John Edwards, former VP candidate and overall sleazeball, finished in 3:30:18.
Oprah Winfrey did it in 4:29:15. Drew Carey finished in 4:37:11.
If Oprah and Drew Carey can do it, you can too. Get off your fat arse, join a local club and start running.

I don't get the appeal of long distance running

What are we running from?

It not being easy is the main point. The challenge and the time goals are why most people do it. I do it because my wife is a triathlete and it means we can compete together. Also, some races are actually fun like Disney.

I hated running when I was paid to do it in the military and I hate it equally as much still today.

I watched it a few years ago. Very inspirational. I saw a double leg amputee carry his broken bike over his shoulder and another guy on what looked like an office chair pushing with ski poles.

And run all day til the running’s done?
No thanks. I ran enough. I’d rather walk 6 hours than run for 3. And, have some semblance of a knee when I’m 65.

I’ve already had a knee surgery. What’s a few more?

Never met a runner with serious knee injuries. Met a bunch of fat frickers who were the tits as back-up offensive linemen in highschool who wear a knee brace to go bowling....

I'm sorry, but running isn't what pops into my head when I think of the word "fun".

For those who have no idea, anything sub 4 hours is a quality run for the every day folks.
Even Oprah at 4:29 is not too bad.
Marathons will test everything you have. And as they say, getting to the starting line is harder than the race itself.
You really need to run about 400+ miles over the 4 months prior in training to run a marathon.
