SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) -- As fire crews gain on wildfires burning for more than a week in Northern California's wine country, new fires broke out in other parts of the state, including northeast of Los Angeles. Fire fighters are battling a blaze that sprang up overnight in the southern Bay Area Santa Cruz mountains, prompting evacuation orders and threatening 100 homes. The fire has torched about 125 acres. Further south, crews with air support are racing to protect a historic observatory and communications towers from a growing brush fire on Mount Wilson northeast of Los Angeles. The blaze was initially estimated at around 5 acres (2 hectares). Officials say the observatory has been evacuated and the fire is not burning near foothill residences.

Call me an a-hole, but wouldn’t proper forestry such as large firebreaks every X number of miles of forest have helped contain this shite?

It’s too late to fix things for this fire but you would think it would be something to consider for the future.

Building houses below sea level and in fire-prone dry areas have consequences. I feel for these people but they kinda know what's up.

But how does this relate to HRC's hurt toe?

Santa Cruz mountain area is a beautiful area too. Considering this is a recurring event every year and sometimes several time per year, you'd think the foresty folks would get their shite in order.

Maybe.

But this yearly occurrence has more to do with Smokey the Bear doing too good of a job with people over the years.

Fires are natural, but all fires became bad fires. Natural fire was suppressed which led to increased fuel loads in these places. Increased fuel loads led to more and more hug, crown fires which destroyed acre after acre.

On top of that, you have more people living in areas where there used to be very few houses and businesses ~20 years ago.

From what I have heard the problem isn't environmentalists it's the new developments. They have to keep responding to small fires because there are homes nearby in areas that were once open forest. Before they could have let them burn down if they were low intensity. Now they have to save people's houses. This leaves less money and time for forest thinning and controled burns. But I'm just going off of an article I read a while back.

Lots of scrub and chaparral on those hills. You can burn it off and it's back in relatively short time.

I don’t think the forestry folks are the problem as much as Sierra Club idiots dictating policy.

Clearing the underbrush may hurt the spotted owl so they can’t do it. And now we get a statewide owl BBQ.

Correct. This is bad for so many people but good for the environment.

There are tons of fire breaks out there and they help it's just so dry and fighting the fire starts with containing it. Add in wind and that screws that up.

Need to start fixing this issue for an environmental purpose and to protect lives and assets.

Who would have thought building residential areas in dry, fuel rich hills could turn into a disaster?

Just wait. Floods and mudslides will follow this winter. More bad news to come even when the fires are out.

Doesn't the underbrush serve to help prevent mud and rock slides?

Amazing that people want to blame california and liberals for this.

The reality is that california was in a drought for 5 years, and just came out of it. and then this summer they didn't get much rain.

The reality of the west is wildfires. and while there are things you can do to not have your house destroyed by them, there isn't a ton of stuff you can do to not have them at all.
