Halloween (2018) will be a direct sequel to the 1978 original film

It will ignore Halloween II all the way through Halloween: Resurrection.

Plus....Judy Greer has been cast in the role of Laurie Strode's daughter:

The forthcoming Halloween reboot will be a sequel to the original movie only, according to series creator John Carpenter. Halloween fans are already aware of how twisted the series’ timeline has become over the years. The original film spawned seven sequels, but that’s not as straightforward as it sounds. Halloween II picked up where the original left off, revealing killer Michael Myers and his victim Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) are actually brother and sister; the movie ended with Myers seemingly dead for good.
Halloween III: Season Of The Witch told an original story and was intended to launch an anthology series; mediocre box-office and angry fans killed that idea. Michael returned to life for Halloween IV-VI, only for Halloween: H20 to wipe those films out of existence by pretending they didn’t happen. Michael finally killed his sister Laurie in Halloween: Resurrection, before the franchise was rebooted with Rob Zombie’s Halloween in 2007. That means at least four separate continuities across ten films, but the next movie is looking to untangle all those knots and go back to basics.

Judy Greer is in talks to join the Halloween franchise as Karen, the daughter of Jamie Lee Curtis’s Laurie Strode. Blumhouse Productions continues to grow as a major influence in the horror genre, and will now be bringing back one of the most beloved horror franchises of all time. Blumhouse is now helping David Gordon Green and Danny McBride’s sequel to John Carpenter’s 1978 hit Halloween get off the ground and in production.
After a few months of talk, some big news came the way of the Halloween sequel when it was announced that Jamie Lee Curtis would return to her iconic role of Laurie Strode once more. As part of this announcement, the sequel also received a late 2018 release date, meaning the start of production is likely not far off. That looks to be true with the first new cast member joining.

So it's basically the same movie except lauries daughter is thrown into the mix? What about her son(Josh Hartnett)?

Ignoring Halloween 2 is dumb
Also Halloween 3 is awesome

And I thought the terminator franchise was at an all-time low.

If you ignore Halloween 2 are they still brother and sister? That didn't come up until the nurse told Loomis in the car when he forced the sheriff to turn around and go to the hospital in the sequel.

Just make it scary and I'll ignore all the obvious plot holes. Fair trade.

They done fricked this up

Strange choice at this point but I don't mind disregarding the majority of the films. I question why you'd ignore 2 though and not just pick up years later after that one.
\With it being after 1, I'm sure Loomis has died off in the 40 years since whereas he easily could be retconned to have just died in the blast at the end of 2.

Halloween H20 already ignored Halloween 4-6, then we had a reboot series, now this one will be a sequel to the original film and ignore everything else? Jesus Christ...
I’m sure it’ll probably still be a good movie but at least count the original Halloween 2 as canon. I like that one.

I like Halloween 2,
But I do think this is a good idea.

Lame. This tactic didn't work for Superman Returns either.

Why? I hate all the different timelines. A creative writer could weave it all together. Even if some parts are just a dream. So now we have Halloween 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 timeline; Halloween 1, 2, H2O, Resurrection Timeline; and Halloween 1 and new movie timeline? Fans of the series deserve better

I understand ignoring everything after Halloween 2, but it's not like 2 is some horrible film in the series.

revealing killer Michael Myers and his victim Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) are actually brother and sister
That probably has something to do with why they're ignoring 2 as well.
