Follow the money. Illicit opiates aren't cheap. If they have a prescription they will run out early. When out they will be irritable with lack of motivation and focus, fatigue, get overwhelmed when stressed and will isolate. This will be followed by opiate withdrawal if a source of opiates is not available which has been described previously. Consider obtaining Narcan if opiate use is ongoing it may save the users life.

Addiction and physical dependence are not the same thing. These are separate processes caused by different problems in different regions of the brain. You can be physically dependent and not be addicted and you can be addicted and not physically dependent. We have confused people by including signs and symptoms of physical dependence in our description of addiction. Addiction usually starts before you ever use a substance.

If you feel someone you know has a substance use problem encourage them to get evaluated by an Addiction Medicine specialist ASAP. It may save their life.

I was in a bad way w 2 different types, pretty sure no one could tell. Absolute junkies have all kinds of tells which have been discussed. Lots of people are capable of hiding it or denying if caught.

quote:This. Been taking 40mg - 60mg of hydrocodone daily for 13+ years, and no one but my doctor, my wife, and one good friend is even aware.
Good chance someone is taking 4-8 lortabs Orally a day and you would have zero clue unless you saw them taking it.
I can--and do--go days without it. Just load up on Naproxen and bite the bullet for the aches/pains it doesn't touch. Hydro abstinence is a bitch since I'm treating, among other things, chronic leg pain caused by an epic battle I lost with a chainsaw, and multiple blown discs from a parachuting mishap. Regardless, I've been taking the same dose of the same medicine for well over a decade, and I have zero desire to increase the daily dose.
All of that said, I guess I'm technically, clinically "addicted," but hydro allows me to perform my job (climbing poles/ladders/towers and doing other strenuous physical labor) and yet lead a normal, pain-free life. So, I'm fine with whatever label society wants to apply. frick 'em all.
I'm not fine with all the goddamn restrictions the FDA/DEA or whomever continues to add to obtaining my prescriptions. Although I'd never do it myself, I can certainly understand the desire some folks have to use heroin once the Government makes getting legal prescription meds too damn difficult/expensive.
All of that is just one more reason I'm a proud Libertarian: "Legalize it all and let Darwin's law take care of the rest."

no, you are dependent, not addicted... you physically need them to perform your job, and have a tolerance to them, so physically you would go through withdrawals if abruptly stopped, but what you are describing is not "addiction".....

Put a handful of Oxy on the table in front of them and see if they squirm and start to vibrate and sweat.

Sure, why not. Just focusing on smaller things that normally wouldn't really matter
