Pressure on Etling

Canada needs to work in some 2-3 step passing plays for Etling. He is under a lot of pressure due to our young offensive line- plus he has a tendency to hang on to the ball too long. I don't believe I have seen one play this season where this team has run a quick two step slant passing play? to help slow down the rush !! Our passing plays seem to take along time to develop !!

He is overthrowing wide receivers in the flat...i don't think running some quick slants will make much of a difference but that's just me. I say put Brennan in since he is the future.

I agree completely. I don’t think the receivers are being coached up to run crisp routes and hit their spots. I think that’s a big part of Etling not trusting the receiver to be there on breaks and spot throws. So he waits to see them open and even looks them down. Brennan’s int was due to poor route.

He has an inability to see the whole field. This makes him a bad qb.

I think our only chance are some perfectly timed back shoulder passes, I just don't know if our receivers can sell it. Ole Miss killed us with it a few years ago. With Etling lack of arm strength, we need to get creative.

He's not a bad QB. He has issues and improvements are needed in order to keep his job, but bad no way.

This was one of his strong suits last year.

Not bad, but terrible. I guess it equates to being good when you can't find the field at Purdue, then become one of the worst qbs in the country as a fifth year senior. I guess the improvement you are looking for will take place in the offseason. Hopefully Orgeron has plans to make him the first 6th year senior without an injury.

For the life of me, I dont understand why we call pass plays that take 5 seconds to develop. He doesnt have that kind of time.

Have you been watching him this season?
He did not progress at all this offseason. He misses wide open receivers, something a fifth year should not be doing.

I don't think Etling possessses the footwork to throw them.
He has missed many receivers that were open early off the line. They don't show as incompletions because he never throws them. Then he scrambles

He's a 5th year Senior
How much more "coaching up" is gonna make him any better?

I find that he is more indecisive and a quick pass over the middle turns into a 5sec/ scramble development play...
I get not wanting to throw an inception but when its 3rd and 6 at the opponents 40 I don't think its necessarily a bad play if you throw an interception trying to make a play. What's the point of being mistake free(throwing it away or dumping it) if you don't attempt to make the first down to extend the drive?
When Brennan made his last interception he was attempting to make a play although forced on 3rd down... it would have been useless anyway when it would have been 4th and 9 at the opponent 42yrd line.
But also in Etlings defense as a group, our receivers suck.

he is a terrible QB, plain and simple, you can make excuses saying its the receivers or the play calling, etc. He missed wide open guys, overthrew screen passes and has very poor footwork.
He is just not good.
He is just not good.

He really isnt under that much pressure. He simply tucks and runs the second he sees his first read isnt wide open

Exactly. For some reason fans cannot grasp this concept. He isn't "under pressure" if he decides on his own to look downfield for half a second and then immediately take off running. Want proof? Our wr's had a total of ONE CATCH on Saturday. He also checks the ball down to a running back in the flat far too early and then at other times when he should check the ball down to a rb quickly because of the blitz, he inexplicably doesn't.

Harris had the same issues, maybe it is the coaching at LSU.

...to be clear then it would be his inability to let his previous coaching go and latch on to what Canada is trying to teach. The idea of protecting the football is important, but the Cam/Miles approach to this is also causing more hesitation when he sees things before releasing the ball.
It is possible that he could start settling down and improving as the season moves on because this is a different offense and maybe he doesn't trust himself in it yet.

You cant throw quick slants if the wide receivers dont get any separation at the line.
