F King Alexander on College Athletics
Salaries for head football coaches are astronomical. Is there a dollar figure you refuse to surpass?
I can’t say that. I’d like to put a cap on all of them, before we’re paying a million a year to a punting coach. Or I’m going to be that punting coach.
The board did ask me when I got here, ‘How long would you stay here?’ I said, ‘As long as it takes, to become an assistant football coach.’
This environment is so fluid … I remember in 1999, I was at a Big Ten meeting. I was with the president of Wisconsin. The Big Ten agreed to put the breaks on all of this spending. Everybody got into a huddle and agreed to do it together collectively. It took about eight months until somebody hired a big-name coach and just blew open the treasure chest again. I think this is one of the biggest issues we face in intercollegiate athletics, and there is a degree of interest in effectively slowing down the spending. I think if we did, we’d see those other conferences put the brakes on it.
I do not think "Sir" gets it but coaches, especially those in three major coaches football, basketball and baseball are perhaps the only accountable people on campus.
They live and die by their "win-loss" records while professors do not give flying frick which student graduates or does not. In fact some of them would love to see more students fail.
Coaches have to not only act as coaches and mentors 24/7 to their student athletes. They are literally responsible for their players conducts, on and off the field. Try being responsible for 85 slightly slow witted, physically aggressive kids.
I earned 2 masters degrees in engineering from LSU and I do not think I have ever found a professor who even makes the slightest effort to mentor even the smartest grad students. They just sit on their high horses and pass judgement.
Coaches get fired all the time, even ones that have won national championships. Tenured faculty can not be legally fired for anything other than cause.
I could go on and on......
Piyush "Bobby" Jindal, wanted to frick Louisiana higher education, just out of spiteful ideology, so bad that we stayed fricked. That is why F King was hired without even a selection process.

don't want to pay a coach during the times of players pushing for further financial compensation.

Mark Emmett understood that the football program is the front door to the university. This intellectual snob doesn't get that.

F King is a problem but he is not the problem. He understands that if just 1 team does it then all it does it hurt that school.
He authorized Alleva to spend the money to buyout Les and then offer big deals to Herman or Jimbo. It was Alleva who did not pursue those 2 as hard as he could and then went with O. Was F King going to let Alleva spend 8 or 9 million a year on an HC? No, but he was not going to stop giving Jimbo a 10 year deal or going to 5.5 or 6 for Herman.

I understand were Alexander is coming from to some extent. At many schools, some degree of athletic expenditures come out of the same pool of money that is used to pay for the academic expenditures. If you are continuing to raise coaches' salaries then you could arguably taking more money from the academic side which, let's be honest, should be the primary focus of a university. Contrary to what some might think (especially those who didn't take a class there) LSU is not just a football program who also offers educational services.
HOWEVER, LSU is different that most other schools in that the athletic side is funded separate and apart from the academic side. Paying the football coach $5 mill a year is not "taking money away" that could be used for the educational pursuits of the school. Hell, the AD gives money to the academic side every year.
F. King needs to acknowledge that LSU (athletics) is its own multi-million dollar business. LSU (academics) is a separate (largely) state funded service. On a basic level it may not seem "right" or be a good example of proper priorties that more money (relatively speaking) is spent on athletics. But 100k people aren't willing to pay $100+ to watch 60 kids take a math test. Athletics generates outside revenue. It's a source of entertainment for which people will pay.

Sorry you had shitty professors. I got my masters and PhD at LSU and we were like family to our major professor. We'd go to his house for events and even to his fish camp on occasion. When I had a medical problem in my first year his wife came to the hospital to check on me.

It's rather perplexing to have Mr. Alexander complaining about the salaries paid to coaches only to have him fire a coach with a $10 million buyout, hire a new coach for 3.5 million with a 10 million buyout with almost squat on resume, and ibegin paying two coordinators almost 4 million.
I'm beginning to think that JA is not the only member of the LSU administration who should go

King hate athletics, understand this. At one point he wanted to get the other presidents to declare 25% of the TV revenue go to the academic side so the academic side could steal it. He is a joke.
