I don't mind spending 65-70 hours a week doing stuff related to my job.
Are you married? Do you have kids? That's 10 hours every day or 14 hours 5 days per week.

Dude, I've worked for Cat for over 20 years. I think I know what they pay welders.

I think his point was are they making 6 figures on 40 hours a week, or are they making $30/ hour and working a ton of OT to hit that number? Big difference.
Here's the thing about the trades that no one talks about, there's also good money in starting your own trades business. There's not a lot of tradesman with great business acumen, you don't want to go into trade school with a college degree planning on actually welding for the next 40 years. You want to go into trade school wanting to open some kind of business using your two schools together.

I am married. I have 4 kids. Oldest is a freshman this year at GT. I don't work in a stationary place though. I have 3 offices. One in Woodstock at our HQs and one in Midtown at a production facility. The other is at my house. I might be away from my house 14 hours on a Monday but never have to leave it on Tuesday, or if I do it might only be for 3 hours or less. I have plenty of quality time with my wife and kids. I am happy to spend all of my non work associated time doing stuff with them instead of doing selfish stuff. Goes back to how I get all of my selfish stuff funded by my job. I also arrange a lot of stuff for customer entertainment that I can include my family members on. Instead of just taking myself and a couple of customers to Garth Brooks in October, I made it a couples thing. I purposely invited 3 guys I know are married. I get to make my wife feel included and they get to win points with there wives. Good for everyone. It is just spending time doing work related stuff and it averages about 12-14 hours a day but it might be with my son sitting right beside me doing his homework while I am talking on the phone or emailing. Some days I might leave at 5am and not get home until 9pm or later. Those are rare but they do happen and my family understands that.

The other thing to think about is after a while if you excel as a welder/fitter, you can move up to foreman, QC, general foremen, etc and make better money without working as hard. Nobody says you have to weld for 20 years.
And of course one could start their own business, but those stories are few and far between. It does happen of course. I know the guy who started SWAT and he's making a killing. They probably have 750 to 1000 guys out at jobs this fall.

You gotta get scuba certified and weld underwater

How is the sales in that market? I'm in oilfield sales at this moment, having to live in another area is exhausting.

Stable and slowly increasing. We will likely never get back to the 2006 type volume but I wouldn't even want to see that bubble again. I like it how it is now.

How much does a welder make?
Epic has billboards up saying starting pay is $30.00. But, you'd be putting money in Jim Bernhard's pocket, might as well just work for Satan directly if your into that type of thing
I worked for him once and enjoyed it very much. Paid well and treated fairly.

Choose instrument or electrical if going the craft route. Better chance to get on permant in a facility if that's your end goal.
A welder is a good profession and you can make money if you want to chase it. Fine now. 30 years from now its tough.

It's common in Louisiana for sure. If you're even a decent welder with some motivation you can work for the "specialty" welding companies. The contract welders working for me make around $35 an hour, double time after 8 hours and all day Saturday and Sunday. On top of that they get $100 a day per diem.

A neighbour makes $30/hr base, but 2x overtime.
But, she (you don't want pics, OT-1) gets laid off like every other month and has to travel for work.

Go into Instrumentation instead. Much easier work for more pay.

Was you working at mosaic 6 months ago?

A good welder that is reliable and can pass a drug screen is always in demand in the chem plant construction and maintenance industry.
You typically sit around while a fitter gets whatever medium your welding ready, you pretty much weld then sit around a lot.
I was a pipe fitter helper summers during college and worked turn arounds. From memory a welder typically made under 10 welds a day and i want to say around 5. Thats on a 10 hour shift.
Most will tell you to go to school because the construction life is hard. Turn arounds, travel, 6-7 day schedules maintaining health care etc.
Neopotism is everywhere, just get used to it or you will be miserable.
If your afraid of heights then construction will not be for you.
Good luck.
