All those kids who payed for friends want their money back. Greek life has had a bad week. It's not good when you see a pledge get KO'd on national news.

That is no different than punishing all black people because one commits a crime

And I guess if a student died during a LSU football (like if that kid that got punched tailgating was killed) game they would suspend LSU football?

In the meantime, a kid is dead who shouldn't be. Other kids are in jail facing charges. The Ole War Skule is in the news -- again -- for something bad.

Greek, GDI, hater, lover, envier: it doesn't matter. This is an AWFUL thing for LSU.

This story made the local Houston 6:00 News. I suspect it will spread to national news soon.

My gf, who's in alpha phi, said that others in the sorority saw that there were snapchats of some of the phi delts "studying" and for every time they got a question wrong they'd take a shot. I highly doubt that they were studying but who knows. Also i don't know if the kid was with them in the snaps either.

It's pretty clear the Greek haters dominate this thread but I'll say anyway, it's comply WRONG to punish thousands of students who, not only did not have anything to do with it, but also make great efforts to follow the rules.

A private organization that can exclude membership for any reason, and be one the most racially segregated groups on college campuses should not be allowed on the campus of a public university that is receiving tax payer funding, they should have been relegated off campus to private property a long time ago.

quote:

WE ARE PHI DELTA THETA The pinnacle of fraternal and professional societies, centered on the potential of each brother, the unquenchable thirst for personal development and the lifelong values of friendship, sound learning and rectitude.
quote:

A FRATERNITY WITH ALCOHOL-FREE HOUSING Phi Delta Theta chapter properties are to remain free from alcohol by anyone, at any time, under any circumstance. The chapter property may be owned by a local house corporation, college or university, or other entity. If the property is considered Phi Delta Theta “space”, the property is to be alcohol-free. This includes not only the structural facility, but the outdoor area including the front and back yard, parking lot and sidewalks.

quote:

Therefore, in February of 1997, the General Council announced the Alcohol-free Housing Policy to the world. Chapters were given more than three years to implement this paradigm shift on their campus and all properties were alcohol-free by the implementation date of July 1, 2000.
quote:

Phi Delta Theta does not condone any form of hazing. It is contrary to the purpose of fraternity, let alone Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Members can still achieve a close group of men throughout the organization without hazing and Phi Delta Theta General Headquarters offers resources to help transplant negative activities with positive ones.
quote:

MANAGING RISK WITHIN OUR CHAPTERS Risk is present within all organizations, and Phi Delta Theta’s main priorities are to provide a values-based experience and keep its members safe. Phi Delta Theta takes a vigilant approach to upholding its risk management policies, and we expect our undergraduate chapters to follow the policies have been laid out by the Fraternity.
Phi Delta Theta's own website

Every single college Greek organization has similar such policies and mission statements. And yet, everyone who has ever set foot on a college campus, parented a college student, been to or watched a college football game, read the news, or just paid attention to the world around them knows that these policies are flaunted in the most extreme manners by the vast majority, if not all, such Greek organizations and their members.

It is beyond absurd to pretend or argue that this isn't true. And it is the height of hubris to rationalize it.

I allow that these organizations may have originated from purer ideals and intentions. But it is so incredibly disingenuous to hold up commonly-purported Greek ideals such as 'fraternity' (or 'sisterhood' or even 'connections'), 'diligence', 'intellectual development', or 'rectitude'( ) as being inevitably derived core values from one's membership.

I grieve for this kid's parents, family, and loved ones. But until the truth is fully acknowledged that 'Greek Life' is primarily one big social club, his death or its meaning is like that of a fish trapped inside the wind...
