What Is Worrying About Etling...

The numbers looks good, but man did he get lucky on a decent number of deep throws. Our WRs had to fight to prevent the INT, let alone make the catch. This has happened in both games.
Has his deep ball improved? Yes. But those same throws are more than likely TOs when we start conference play.

I think Etling throws a horrible deep ball and most of it is because he doesn't have a strong enough arm it causes his mechanics to break down just enough when he needs to throw it deep.

I'll agree that there were 2 plays where the WR had to make a play to catch it or it's an int but I'd argue that the throw to Sullivan was a case of KYP. Knowing Your Personnel.
You see a 6'6 WR against a bunch of 5'9 guys, idc if they had 10 guys back there throw him the ball.
When in the BYU game did a WR have to bail Etling out? Everything in that game was on the money.

This.
When you have a mismatch against inferior personnel, sometimes you can trust your guy to go up and get the ball. See it all the time in the NFL.

I noticed he was a lot more accurate early on before we took a big lead. I think he just lost focus, maybe tried to pad his stats a little. There's no arguing that some of the throws he made would have likely resulted in interceptions against SEC defenses. But, you have to admit that his accuracy on deep balls, primarily along the sidelines, has improved. I trust the coaching staff will work on these things this week. Whether or not he can do enough to beat teams like Auburn and Bama has yet to be seen but he is definitely making progress.

I only remember 2. The first, into double coverage, he threw up there expecting his 6'6" receiver to go up and get it.
The second one was under thrown and appeared to be thrown into quadruple coverage, but actually I think the receiver was behind all of the defenders and would have been considered wide open if the ball had been out in front of him.
The ball he threw to Chark on the sideline was a freaking beautiful throw.

I think here are legit concerns about the offense and QB is one of them.
But.... it is strange how much people are bitching about a bunch of COMPLETED deep balls last night.
Fact is we have no way of knowing if those would be ints against better competition. Maybe out wrs have the ability to come down with those balls against anyone.
There really is absolutely nothing that will satisfy a portion of this fan base.

Part of Etling's problems on his deep balls are hesitating.
Etling doesn't anticipate his WR being open and he actually has to see him open before he throws it. (when you first think of this, it sounds like a smart move) This causes him to hesitate and the ball arrives later than it should allowing DBs to catch up (this is where the ball can be picked off, so in essence it's not as smart a move as one thinks). Davis should have never broken stride on that TD, but he had to slow down to wait on it.
And this is a minor criticism so before anyone jumps in here and says I'm bashing the kid, I want to preemptively tell that person that he/she is stupid.

Nobody wants to hear this but if you watch 5he games you will see it. He holds the ball too long on almost every play. Doesn't have the arm strength to do that.

If he forces those deep throws against better opponents, I'll be right there with you.
For now, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he threw those because we were playing Chattanooga.
