New study shows that Fox News has greatly influenced the outcome of presidential elections

A new study in the American Economic Review (the discipline’s flagship journal), with an intriguing and persuasive methodology, finds exactly that. Emory University political scientist Gregory Martin and Stanford economist Ali Yurukoglu estimate that watching Fox News directly causes a substantial rightward shift in viewers’ attitudes, which translates into a significantly greater willingness to vote for Republican candidates.
They estimate that if Fox News hadn't existed, the Republican presidential candidate’s share of the two-party vote would have been 3.59 points lower in 2004 and 6.34 points lower in 2008.
For context, that would've made John Kerry the 2004 popular vote winner, and turned Barack Obama's 2008 victory into a landslide where he got 60 percent of the two-party vote.
"There is a non-trivial amount of uncertainty" about those estimates, Yurukoglu cautions. "I personally don't think it's totally implausible, but it is higher than I would have guessed prior to the research." And even if the effect were half as large as estimated, that’d still mean that Fox News is having a very real, sizable effect on elections.
“Fox is substantially better at influencing Democrats than MSNBC is at influencing Republicans," the authors find. While most Fox viewers are Republican, a sizable minority aren't, and they're particularly suggestible to the channel's influence. In 2000, they estimate that 58 percent of Fox viewers who were initially Democrats changed to supporting the Republican candidate by the end of the election cycle; in 2004, the persuasion rate was 27 percent, and 28 percent in 2008. MSNBC, by contrast, only persuaded 8 percent of initial Republicans to vote Democratic in the 2008 cycle.
These are big effects, with major societal implications. The authors find that the Fox News effect translates into a 0.46 percentage point boost to the GOP vote share in the 2000 presidential race, a 3.59-point boost in 2004, and a 6.34-point boost in 2008; the boost increases as the channel's viewership grew. This effect alone is large enough, they argue, to explain all the polarization in the US public's political views from 2000 to 2008.

Would like to see a study on the entire left wing media propaganda machine

They are the biggest for a reason, they cater to normal ppl and have no competition for that audience.

If some significant percentage of Dem voters who watch Fox News turn and vote for a Republican, it tells me that providing an alternative perspective, even if it is a small amount, to the onslaught of progressive talking points in the MSM, Sports news coverage, academia, etc. etc. is like shining a small ray of sunlight into a dark place. It can't help but being illuminating.

Good propaganda works, not all that shocking.

One channel?
Puts quite a chilling perspective on the extreme leftward influence 95% of media must then be presumed to exert.

Yeah well go google breaking news on any day 7 days a week. It's New York Times etc and any liberal slant that fits liberal google needs. It might change this week because of the hurricane headlines but it is always slanted way left. However, they are failing because more people have access to other media and see through this bs.

the real question here is why are the three networks and cnn and msnbc so ineffective. maybe liberals are retards.

At least one of these is addressed by the OP:

Upvoted.
A great example of why SJWs and progressives are so desperate to kill free speech. The data is clear: when people have the opportunity to hear both sides in the media, they overwhelmingly choose Right.

I'm reading their paper now. Their instrument choice is interesting, but I'm not quite sure how it is valid. Perhaps I'm not understanding what they mean by channel position, but if it is what I think they mean, then channel position is usually random among local cable companies. Though, satellite will be the same.

That was actually the only interesting part.
I can quickly see 2 mistakes being made in their premise.
1st Fox does not equate to MSNBC as those on the left suppose.
Fox does not even equate to CNN anymore. It is what CNN was 20 years ago except from a right of center point of view.
2nd How much influence on the electorate has the rest of the MSM had on peoples voting for the left over the last 30+ years?
