BYU v. PS -Bad or Vanilla?

I see a lot of people discussing how bad BYU, and I agree I was pretty shocked at how dismal there offense was. There defense looked well, but most legit FBS programs would against and FCS.
My real question is, how much of that game was BYU purposely playing a bland game and how much of it was that BYU is actually a mediocre 6-6/7-5 team.

Their offensive scheme isn't innovative but they did hold some things back. Their QB isn't a world beater by any means. I think their OL would be below average in the SEC and their skill positions are about the same.

I think BYU and their fans will be very surprised.

They have no running g game, wide recs can't get separation, and qb is a statue. If they told them all to play like that, then great disguise. Lsu by 25+

Their OTs looked slow, the tigers edge rushersshould have a big day. Possibly double digit sacks.

Vanilla. But their offensive line will not be able to handle LSU's rush.

They had to want desperately to score in the second half. And they tried. But their offense got shoved around.

The QB had a lot of time to throw, and Was pretty accurate on the run, and had a lot of time in the pocket on occasions. He liked the TE's as the WR couldn't beat press coverage very often. They really couldn't run the ball, which is going to hurt them against LSU. I doubt they were vanilla as tight as it was in the 4th quarter. If they have to pass a lot, it could get ugly IMO. Their QB won't get away with what he did against Portland, running laterally to throw on the edges, and sitting in the pocket as long as he did. BYU will need to have quick passes and creatively find a run game that will open their options. I'm thinking the WR's will not be much of a factor, and they will throw to TE's and backs a lot, like when their WR scored that TD against Portland from a short pass in the flat from being in motion across the backfield at the snap. I also see them running a lot of gimmick plays...

It wasn't play calling. the BYU WR couldn't get separation. Their OLine isn't that big.

Probably a mix of both. People say Portland State is talented for a 1AA school but if they can man up and stuff the box on BYU, we should absolutely have our way with them on defense.

BYU was in a "look ahead" spot. They will bring their A game, we all know it. If we match their intensity we will pull away big league in the 2nd half!

They were on their way to pass for 300+ yards at half-time.
Then in the second half they shut down their passing game and mostly ran the same two running plays over and over again for the rest of the game.
What do you think that means?

BYU is employing the secret playbook, bruh. So obvious...

Awesome...a fellow football fan who can watch a game and actually see what's happening!
Yes, only two running plays were called all game. A receiver went in motion only twice the entire game: once for a 1st down, once for a touchdown.
Will the fact that BYU went vanilla help them in any way? No one knows. Just like no one knows if your offense will be sharp or shite.

Not sure how much they were holding back. They were never out of the woods against an FCS team. When were they planning on opening the play book? They were in danger of possibly losing the game in 4th quarter. That would have been a good time to stop holding back, but they looked the same they all game.

When viewing a game, you just watch where the ball goes, don't you?

Depends on what part of the game. On the actual live play, yes, that is the exciting part. On the reply or before a play I'll look at how the O/D line up and react.
Do not act all high and mighty trying to save face that you had to escape at home to an FCS team.

The problems I saw for BYU were not related to scheme or play calling. Ive seen a break down in fundamentals.

A good chunk of their yards came from a couple of plays. If they throw deep go up and get it punts against us their going to get picked off.
