I think you mean 1961 and not 1962. They have no legit argument in 62. 61 would be a stretch too, but at least it could be stretched.

Don't know much about the '62 team, but 1908 definitely should be recognized.

The 1908 team is one of the best of all-time, really.

LSU outscored their opponents 442-11 that season. An average score of 44-1.

They did not allow a single TD all season and shut out 7 teams including Baylor (89-0), Mississippi State (50-0), Texas A&M (26-0), La Tech (22-0).

Their closest game was a 10-2 win over Auburn which was not only Auburn's only loss of the season, it was the only game Auburn didn't shut out their opponent.

NCAA.com claims 1908 as a split championship between LSU and Penn so it isn't like there is no merit in claiming it.

Yes I also think we should also claim that one for damn sure but I mean why not just claim 62 as a national title because look it was Charlie McClendons first year as LSU head football coach and we had a 9-1-1 record so why not?? And anyone know how this even came to be ?? How did the titles 1908, 1935, 1936 and 1962 even surface as a LSU national championship claim?? Obviously we know how 1908 came to be!!

1961 Team was 10-1 and defeated Colorado in the Orange Bowl. It was Dietzel's last year. The 1961 Team was ranked No.3 in the Nation. They Shutout Georgia Tech, Florida, and North Carolina all at their home, They shutout Tulane in Tiger Stadium. The next year 1962 Charlie Mac's first team went 9-1-1 and defeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl. In two years LSU went 19-2-1 and won both Bowl Games against Top Ranked Teams. Probably 2 of the best years in History.

Because Ole Miss went 10-0 and we went 9-1-1 and they beat us 15-7 in Tiger Stadium and even they didn't win the national title, finishing 3rd in the final AP poll behind USC and Wisconsin. In addition to our loss to them, we also had a tie with Rice and finished 7th in the AP poll. It would be pretty ridiculous to claim a national title for that year just because some obscure screwy ranking system had us #1.

Just stop with that crap, that wasn't even football back then. LSU beat such powerhouses as a local mens gymnastics club (true story not a joke) and the New Orleans national guard chapter. When you scored you got the option of kicking off or receiving. Football didn't really exist until the 50's.

The 1961 LSU Team can claim the NC but has not done it. The 1962 Team cannot claim it. The 1961 Team is listed as winning the NC.

And the Cotton Bowl after the 61 season was the most important game in LSU history. Before that game, LSU teams could not play teams that had black athletes. The Governor called a special session of the legislature and they quickly passed the bill and the Governor signed it.
The rest is history
