Players Cavity Back Irons

What are some of the more popular players CB irons over the last several years (let's say since 2010)?
I currently game Ping G10's and plan to do so at least until I can consistently break 90, but I like to think about what my next set will be.
I like the look of the Ping IE1's and the Mizuno MP-53's. Any thoughts on those?

There are basically four groups of irons now:
Super Game Improvement: Ping G-Max, Cobra King Oversize
Game Improvement: Ping G, Apex CF16, AP1, Z565, JPX 900HM, etc.
Players: Srixon Z765, Ping i200, Apex Pro, AP2, Mizuno JPX tour, P770, etc.
Blades: Z965, MP-18, Titleist MB, etc.

The Adams CB series are fantastic, underrated, and inexpensive. Many come with KBS shafts which I hit better than either DG or Rifle.

I hate that Titleist makes two clubs that fall in the same "non-game improvement" category.
The CBs (Cavity Backs) either fall in with the AP2 in the "Players" category or do people consider them to be a "Cavity Blade" and they fall in the "Blade" category with the MBs?
It just makes things a little more confusing. B/c you could argue the AP1s are Super GI, but it is hard to say the AP2s are GI, if anything they fall right between the GI and Players. Now, to add more confusion, they are coming out with a AP3 which will be more GI than the AP1s. So the playability / forgiveness goes something like (Most forgiving to least):
AP3
AP1
AP2
CB
MB

don't forget the T-MB. I have no clue what category those are supposed to fall into.

The CB/MB combo set is great. 3-6 iron are a CB, 7-PW in an MB.

Not for someone that is only breaking 90. That is a good set for a good ball striker to transition to when they are breaking 80 consistently.
This guy needs the AP3s or an equivalent - I like the JPX Tour 900s but those won't help a player of this level. Bridgestone makes a decent iron for a so called "players cavity back"

That may or may not be true. It's an opinion.

Those are more of a driving iron / utility iron type club. But in Japan they have full sets of the T-mb through PW

Thank you for the correction. Still just adds to the which are for which and I have that the numbering is not sequential. I wish they would have just moved the AP2s up in the he line up, but that would have really messed people up.

I love that combo set. I want it pretty bad. Maybe one day I will fork over the cash.

Looks to me like the new 2 moved closer to the blades.

Quick sorta related question - I'm finding that the vast majority of used players irons have stiff staffs. I'm pretty sure I should be sticking with regular shafts since I typically hit 7 iron ~150 yards. Would going with stiff shafts be a big mistake for me or would I hardly notice a difference?

I play the Titleist CB from 5 years ago...having a hard time letting them travel to the back of my closet!

quote:Depends on the shaft. The KBS Tour 90s in S play pretty soft. DG S300 does not. In Rifle, you could safely play 5.5, but in Tour Flighted, 5.5 is rather stiff.

I'm about to switch from KBS tour 120 to the Nippon Pro 120 with the higher kickpoint. Easier to load and a little lighter. KBS have been great but as the round goes on in this heat, they wear me down some. Tried the Nippon at a recent demo day and they felt perfect.

I really need to hit some Nippons because a lot of the used sets I'm looking at come with them.

If you can, try the G25's. They are a little less bulky than typical cavity backs but extremely forgiving. Here's the catch though, they are also super easy to work.
I gamed some for a while and loved them before going back to Ping i20's. Not a whole lot of changes in irons from the G25 to the current G400. The G25 have slightly smaller soles than the G20's so turf interaction is much more desirable.
I hit the Ping iE1's and they are going to be closer to the I25 and I200 line. Less forgiving but improved workability. I'd also look into the JPX line of Mizuno.

Me too. Never hit anything that could justify spending more money. They don't have the greatest feel, but they perform fantastically.
