Maybe my memory is bad, but I never recall there being multiple p5 teams playing one week before opening saturday.
On saturday, august 26th, BYU, Colorado state, stanford, oregon state, and south florida all have games.
Is this some new thing?

I thought it was weird too. CSU plays two games in less than a week to start the year

Seems new to me as well.

Don't think there always were as many as this year, but the old Kickoff Classic, Pigskin Classic and Eddie Robinson Classic were usually bigger name matchups prior to Labor Day.
Also for anyone that played the NCAA football video games, the first week of a season in dynasty mode always had a few random games in August. So I guess it was a known thing to a lesser extent.

This seems new. Last year was the first time I can remember a FBS game (Cal/Hawaii) before Labor Day weekend. There was the FCS kickoff game for awhile that I liked a lot. The NDSU/Montana game a few years ago was a classic.

Now if you play at Hawaii at any point in the season, then you can play a game on "Week 0." It's a new rule that was adopted. Before this season, teams could schedule a 13th game if they played at Hawaii. This is an expansion of the rule.
Also Stanford and Rice have a waiver because the game is in Australia.

The Kickoff Classic (1983-2002), Pigskin Classic (1990-2002), and Eddie Robinson Classic (1997-2002) were always held before Labor Day. All three ended in 2002 when the NCAA stopped allowing them as a 12th game.

IIRC, for the past 10 years or so there were Thursday night games to kick off the season so this is new.
