Pro hunter here. My gun wouldn't group 180 Barnes for shite. I shoot a 225 accubond now. My gun loves them.

Barnes 180 TSX. Tried the Hornady, gun didn't like them. I have the CVS Scout. It does shoot the Corelokts ok. This year I'm loading my own Barnes tSX.

I shoot an Encore with a Bergara barrel using Hornady Superformance 200 grain bullets. The combo will shoot real world 1.5" groups all day. A sledge hammer on deer!

Whatever the gun shoots. Start with the cheap common stuff and if it doesn't like any of that work your way up.
.35 Whelen is a very capable elk caliber. Anything that your gun will shoot minute-of-deer will work. Stay away from the premium tough bullets geared towards elk.
This^^^^. The only thing I'd add would be to try to hunt w/ a load that's readily available, hopefully locally.

Any thing that will get to him. He won't walk if you make contact.

50 to 75 yards. Not terrible.

I have a tc pro hunter. I handload for almost all my weapons, my gun loves 225 Hornadys
My longest kill is 275 yards. Out of 20 plus deer killed, I have only had one that we had to blood trail over 50 yards.
The 45/70 is a hammer inside 200 yards, the 35whelen is a true 300 yard gun.

For a deer NOT hit in the brain, spinal cord or double shoulder/pelvis, that's a short run and acceptable performance for a deer hit by a moderate velocity round like the 35 Whelen.

All deer shot with the .35 ran off. Ones shot with a 45.70 fell in tracks
By that calculator, .22 is the greatest deer caliber of all time.
Never seen one shot with a .22 run off.

Yea, anything under 100 yards with a very good blood trail is IMO exceptional performance. I'll find that deer 99.99% of the time.

I'm shooting a CVA Apex
My gun shoots the 225gr Federal Premium Trophy Bonded Bear Claw with good accuracy.
Only killed 1 deer with it so far and it did not go very far.
Great blood trail.
And these bullets are silver in color so they are my go-to werewolf round
