I've never been there but I'm thinking about going to San Diego in early November for about 5 days. Are there any areas to avoid and what are some of the must see things there? Food recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Can't go wrong with Fish Tacos, even the ones at the hotel on waterfront we stayed at were good
Go to the little Italy area for several places worth trying
Coronado - check out the Hotel del Coronado - you don't have to stay there to visit the beach and eat at the restaurants - both casual and fancy
Cabrillo National Monument - the views back into San Diego and across Pacific are incredible, go down to tidepools as well
San Diego Zoo is the Disney World of zoos, you could easily spend most of the day there
Gaslamp district is more touristy type restaurants but nice place to catch a drink and short walk from the hotels on San Diego bay

There is tour that will take you to most of the places in those pictures if you don't have a rental to get there.
La Jolla definitely worth seeing.
The glider port is also a nice place to go check out before La Jolla - awesome views from high atop cliffs.

Pop's Liquor Cabinet
Go to Pop's in the Gaslamp. It's only open from 9 pm to 2 am and it's tiny but they make the best drinks I've ever had. Seriously.
I'm in San Diego at least once a month and I am always there when in town

Del Mar is a cool town.
Torrey Pines area has some great trails.
Rent a car and do a long day trip or an overnight trip to Ensenada Mexico.

Drive up Pacific Coast Highway. Explore some of the beach towns north of San Diego (Laguna Beach, Newport, Huntington Beach)

I was going to recommend what the above poster recommended. Orange County is great.
Also I'd venture northeast to Temucula wine region and stay a night. It has 40+ wineries and is beautiful
Also my boss always goes down into Mexico and spends a day at a beach town(forgot the name). He always swears by the seafood. Said they have places that they dump a ton of fresh seafood on your table and it's like $30/person. Crabs, lobster, shrimp

Ah, Mexican lobster. Cheap and usually great.

Agree. I'm in the area a few times a year, but last week was my first drive out to Laguna Beach. Totally worth it. Beautiful place with tons of rich people to gawk at and with you had their lives.
Also - OP - Get Italian food in Little Italy. Bencotto was the best Italian food I've ever had.

Everyone else has given you some great recommendations to visit while in San Diego. Coronado Island is a must as is the San Diego Zoo. As far as dining, check out Hodad's, a funky burger joint located downtown and in Ocean Beach. Also, check out El Indio Mexican Restaurant located off India Street in the Five Points area of San Diego. It's a family owned restaurant that makes great Carne Asada. You can't go wrong with either place.

You can go to Old Town for authentic Mexican food as well
A little north of downtown.

Must go to Coronado (Coronado Brewery, McPs which is a navy seal bar). Also old Town San Diego and the gas lamp district. Hit the zoo as it is the best in the country.

We are going back for a quick weekend trip for our 5 year anniversary. I want to stay someplace right on the boardwalk in either Newport Beach or Pacific Beach. We drove through Laguna but didn't stop.
I've seen a couple studios on airbnb. Tiny and nothing fancy about the ones I'm seeing in my budget, but you are right on the boardwalk next to a bunch of shops/bars/restaurants for many of them. Many of them you can sit in your bed and see the ocean from your window.

Haven't been in awhile, but one of my favorite generic places was seaport village. Reminded me of the "different" shops like old town spring- had one store that was nothing but stuff for left handed people.

Balboa Park, Petco Park and catch a Padre's Game. La Jolla and snorkel with the leopard sharks. San Diego Zoo, make sure to take the bus tour before taking it on your own. Lots of uphill walking.

If ur there during the weekend of the 3rd-5th, the Breeders cup is at Del Mar race track.
prices will be jacked up, and hotels should be packed.
u are better off renting a condo/townhouse on the beach.

:Bump:
Great suggestions in the thread. Going to San Diego in June/July for a conference and staying an extra five days. I’d appreciate any updated suggestions.
FYI: Not sure where we are staying yet, but planning on visiting the zoo and Little Italy. Enjoy visiting the food and brewery scenes and any amazing sites/views. TIA
