Dogs influence millennials to buy homes more than babies and marriage

Young homeowners are now purchasing homes because of their pets. One realtor explains it's not the discussion people 30 years ago were having. Jeremy Miller works for Brik Realty and said, "(The) relationship a homeowner has with their pet and why that's provoking them to buy (is) pretty exciting and also very interesting."

1/3 of all millennials who buy their first homes do it for man's best friend. It's simply because of wanting to have more in-home and yard space for these pets. A survey from SunTrust Mortgage looks at the buying habits of millennials. More people list dogs as a greater reason for picking a larger property than marriage or a baby.

Davis explained, "Millennials work long hours. They have animals they invest their time in, and they are not as concerned with being married and starting a family based on when society says we should do that." In the survey, 42% of millennials who have never bought a home said a dog or the desire to have a dog would impact their decision to buy a home in the future

Such a terrible generation of people.

I've yet to see a property that bans babies in the lease agreement, but searching for a house to rent with two labs is like applying for a job with a felony on your record.

Blame those who raised them, or in many cases failed to raise them.

One of the things millenials are actually doing right is delaying having kids and starting off with pets.

They are beginning to gentrify some of the older neighborhoods in Stuttgart.

Omg this is terrible
People waiting to have kids/not having kids at all
Seriously it's a lot easier to have a kid in an apartment or rental then a large pet. Good luck getting a lab approved in a 3rd story 1 bedroom

I'm sorry but I don't buy that for a second

Only idiots think having a ton of kids in today's society is a good idea.

That's kind of the point. I doubt owning a dog was the sole motivation for these people. More like they're old enough to move out of the shoebox apartment complexes and buying a house is actually easier than renting in most markets. Add a dog to the equation and it's a no brainer.

Dogs > People, especially millennials

How is this a new thing? If you have a big dog, you'd want him to have a decent sized yard.
I don't understand the issue.

The point about now vs. 30 years ago still stands

Fair housing laws - can't discriminate against people based on family status (unless you own fewer than 4 units and don't list with a realtor).
I got an apartment once with two dogs. It was a dump, but it was cheap and in a great area.

IDK why, but I blame the boomers.

You don't think the housing market has changed just a smidge in 30 years?
