Well you just contradicted yourself in one sentence:
Deadlifts have been around forever exactly because it is a very useful exercise, arguably the most useful. Just because crossfitters do them doesn't mean you have to shite on them.
I vehemently disagree. More middle aged people have back pain precisely because they don't develop posterior chain strength and stability. The deadlift (or some form of it) is the best exercise to develop that strength. Why is back pain probably the #1 orthopedic issue for most of the population? It's not because of crossfitters and weightlifters. It's desk sitters and fatasses.
If you're saying it's not necessary to max out and lift the heaviest weight possible, then I would agree. But to overall dismiss deadlifts altogether as too risky is just short-sighted.

20 years ago you did not see girls and 40 year old men doing DL's in public gyms. You can see it everyday now. Why? It got popular with xfit.
Sprint intervals are the best thing for fat burning, leg building and cardio. Would you recommend a person who can't run an 10 min mile to run some 200's for cardio?
No S$$$. Now compare injuries stats of 30 year olds who keep DL vs those who don't. Better yet ask an Ortho what he suggests. I knew the exact responses I would get before I posted. Tough guys and the DL for life crowd. It's a high risk movement and that's a fact especially the older you get because you naturally lose flexibility with age which eventually catches up to your form.
Just because it's a good lift doesn't mean it's for everyone. I run sprint intervals for cardio but if I took Lester Earl and Hu Flung Pu with me today both would vomit and one would end up with some kind of leg injury.

What do you mean by money? Obesity is one of the biggest health problems this country faces and that leads directly to back and joint problems. Do you think more people have joint issues because of deadlifts rather than just being overweight? Deadlifts are a high risk lift but it should be a calculated risk.

That has much more to do with the internet in general than xfit IMO. You see Alot of shite in the gym today you prob wouldn't see as often 20 years ago. shite, women in the gym lifting weights in general is kind of a new phenomenon. That's because the info is more readily available for everyone, as are the benefits of DL's.

Strawman argument. There's ways to have beginners do DL's safely. Sprinting is whole different animal.

Show me those stats. You're the one who's claiming DL's are dangerous.
I'm willing to bet those stats are similar to 30 year olds who weight train in general versus those who don't.

Just saying, I don't think doing a 3 Rep set of deadlifts is exclusive to CrossFit

Yeah. This wasn't a timed WOD or anything. This was just the strength workout before the WOD.

FWIW, I've switched completely over to RDL's.
Made the change at 34 after doing a linear prog program for years and knowing I'll never DL more than I already had. Saw plenty of 30+ lifters with herniations to not see the light.
The way I view deadlifts is more like the Westside school, the squat builds strength and the DL tests it. The DL is all about challenging position, and the fight isn't as much with the weight, it's about holding position.
My best guess is that you overextended during those touch and go reps. I bet your psoas are tender as hell.

I just ruined by low back on the DL back in May. Just taking a few months off from squats and DL. It sucks but honestly not worth risking a lifelong back injury to try and rush the recovery.
