Have you guys seen the hit piece article from yesterday? The Milwaukee Sentinel has a story that accuses some Mexican All inclusive resorts of drugging tourist or serving tainted liquor and having a relationship with medical providers to extort money.
Report
I'm scheduled to spend a week vacation at the Iberostar Cozumel in August. I say this in jest, but am I going to die? The Iberostar Cozumel was chosen by the group because of its proximity to good diving. Anybody have experience with this resort?
In all seriousness, I don't think this is a systematic issue, however I wouldn't be surprised if there are isolated incidents of tourist being roofied while on vacation.
Has anyone on this board had an issue or situation similar to described?

Resorts in Mexico are being accused of either serving dangerous and illegal alcohol to their guests, or worse — actually drugging them. This according to an investigation by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that revealed similar sad stories from numerous victims and their families whose dream vacations quickly turned nightmarish.

They serve alcoholic drinks with alcohol of bad quality and in great amounts, mixing different types of drinks,” said an attorney hired by the family of Conner. A report from Mexico’s Tax Administration Service found that in 2015, 43 percent of the alcohol consumed in Mexico was illegal. The illegal booze wasn’t subjected to the same rules and regulations, making the product more dangerous. Instead of using ethanol, the unregulated alcohol contains dangerous concentrations of methanol.

I went to the Iberostar Grand Playa Paraiso a few years ago. I lived. I've had friends go recently. They lived.

Stayed at Iberostar many times however this was about 10 years ago. Never had a problem. On a side note, you'll love diving Cozumel. And, go to Coconuts on the east side of the island if you have the opportunity.

I haven't been to Cozumel in 10 years. I have a friend that goes every year and stays at the Iberostar in Cozumel. He dives, does the all you can drink package, etc. He's fine.
I will say, however, that Mexico is Mexico. The tourist areas seem safe, but there is a dangerous underculture everywhere in Mexico. They have no rule of law. It's all about bribes and who is protecting whom.
Just watch your arse and you will probably be fine.

Read this on my lunch today. Sounds like isolated cases, but makes you think nonetheless. Have our honeymoon scheduled at the Paradisus in September. Didn't see them particularly mentioned in the article, but it is an all-inclusive just like Iberostar. If anything it's really good information to know heading there. Definitely won't be canceling my trip over it. And definitely won't keep me from consuming alcohol every day either. Lol. Big publication like that will also most likely make them tighten up over the next few months, if for nothing else than possibly losing a lot of American dollars.

Huh, guess there may have been something to the accusations when that brother and sister were found unconscious in a pool down there.
The girl died and her organs we're harvested. Guy in LA got her heart.

Been three times. Several of my friends go often and I've never heard of any issues.
I wouldn't worry much about something like this.

Stayed on this property a couple years ago. Too big for my personal tastes. Nice property, good service.... good was decent but since it is the southernmost resort it is a longer drive into town for a really great meal.
Do not use the dive op at the resort. They use cattle boats and hire foreign DMs who just got their cards. They do not know the reef system like the locals or even tourists familiar with the marine park. I tried them one day and ended up taking control of the dice because the young English DM was lost and didn't know where to find marine life.

The part that got me was they had 4 or 5 shots of tequila then another one with the group. Uh yeah... 6 shots isn't the problem at all

Zero evidence just the assumptions of parents whose kids got wasted and won the stupid prize many of could have won playing that getting wasted in the plane and continuing the party in the pool and heat game, can't be my kids fricked up it must have been Mexicans right? This is so blatantly stupid and racist on so many levels it's worthy of a laugh not a discussion
