JP Morgan projects this as average price - so there will be some below and above. The currently most expensive model 7plus 256gb is $969.

and the 7S will be the same price tiers as current iPhones.

You're saying they will introduce a 7s at lower price point?

Lower price point than the 8/Pro/X whatever the premium one is going to be.

It sounds like it's artificially high pricing because they just can't get the components they need to make 200 million phones a year yet. What I want to know is will they keep a separate super premium phone model going forward, or is it just for this year while they work on ramping up supply for the new phones?
What unique features will the iPhone X have that will require me paying twice as much? Will the iPhone 8 next year basically be this year's iPhone X? If so I guess that won't be bad. But if they are permanently creating a "Pro" line of phones that cost almost twice as much, that seems like a risky strategy. Especially if the features you're getting for twice as much pretty much get the iPhone back in step with Android phones, until they bring out their new models and pull ahead again.

Think this is a single year thing to test the waters with it. Switching screen type and changes to home button/fingerprint scanner. Don't think they have anywhere near the supply like they normally do, so spitting out the 7S versions along with a high price as well to try to relieve demand somewhat.

I don't get it. I thought the s version is the premium version.

The S version has been the off cycle yearly upgrade.
Like the 6 to the 6s was basically the same phone with better internals just a year different release date with the 6s being newer. Plus has been the bigger size version so the 6 and the 6s both had plus versions.
Last year was the 7 and the 7 plus, this year you will have the 7s and 7s plus, but you will also have a X or pro version that will be similar in size to the 7s, but with a screen size of the 7s plus. This new "premium" version will be the first year they do this with this design.

I don't get what they are making premium though. I thought they were all supposed to be premium. The s use to just have a few extra software upgrade with a few upgrades to the hardware. Are they diminishing the quality of the regular ones? I don't like Apple phones but they are quality pieces.
Btw, I'm legit asking for curiosity not to bash.

The problem is that they are trying to shift to OLED screens and some other "new" components. You need to be able to make 200 million units a year when you're talking about the iPhone and they can't make that many of the new type of phone this year.

This is why poor people will never break the cycle.

They're trying to put the fingerprint scanner underneath the glass and are having a hard time

I think they gave up on that for this year. Probably retina or some other way.

They should just put it on the back (not like Samsung) and get on with life

I just got the 7 plus for work and I love it.

with RED coming out with a phone for like $1500, they probably think they can justify it since other companies without the track record are doing it.

I think you're missing the point.
The "s" isn't premium (anymore than every Apple product is premium). It's just the next interim yearly upgrade that doesn't really include a major overhaul. It generally keeps the same form factor and improves the internals to keep up with the year long gap since the last phone.
Some people like the "S" cycle because they claim the glitches are smoothed out by that point. It's basically set so that you can be an early adopter and get latest/greatest from Apple, or you can wait until "S" and get the version that theoretically may be a bit more reliable.
I'm hoping to get an 8, but if there are huge delays past October I may have to go 7s
