Mississippi isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be
I know a lot of people from Mississippi and generally like most of them. My question is where in the hell do they work? There's one city of 100k or more and it's Jackson which is a dump.

If studies like this keep people from the Left Coast away, I'm all for them.... Move to Austin or ruin Colorado.

With the exception of New Mexico those states carve a swath right up the middle of the country.

So Alabama's bad rating is based mostly on its lack of pandering to the mentally impaired?
I may never move.

This is the truth, the Delta is the biggest dump in the country.

I mean, if you're just looking for shopping malls and Top Golfs I guess. There are plenty of upper class enclaves up and down the Delta where upstanding people can raise a family and make a good living. You just have to be in one of a handful of professions and be okay with making a decent drive for more urban attractions.
As far as rural entertainment goes it's hard to beat with the myriad lakes and bayous for water sports and woods/fields for hunting/shooting sports. Some small towns are quite active in putting together social events for local entertainment, as well.
Every place has its down areas, including the shining bastions of Progressivism on the West and East Coasts. It's also more common for the wealthy over there to live in town and thus invest in its upkeep. It just so happens that in the Delta many of your wealthier, more upstanding citizens don't live and invest much in the small towns near them. They'd rather put that money towards fixing up the places they own in the countryside, which creates the duality of a REALLY nice, well-kept countryside and run down towns. But of course, most visitors don't see or notice the countryside much, they notice the towns.

Tennessee is an awesome place to live. We only have one problem area...and that's Memphis. I can't figure out why though...

Never underestimate how much the Northeast libs and West Coast progressives hate the South, the Heartland and those who live there.

I like Mississippi fine, but I can't believe that a state that houses Jackson and the Delta has "low crime rate" as one of its strengths.

I'm also not sure if they realize how little we care about what they think. Often times, the values that they attribute to making a place nice to live are those that I care the least about.

This attitude is at least partly responsible for the shitty attributes of Louisiana.

It's funny when everybody gets butt hurt about rankings like this. We all love our home state but it really is a pretty shitty place to live in comparison to most other states and it all starts with out inept state government.

Solving LA is like solving sub-Saharan Africa or the Middle East. Too much corruption, cronyism, tribalism, poverty and ignorance. I really don't see how it can be done.

we were 47 in 2016, we're 49 in 2017.

I don't think it's talking about you specifically. It's an overall ranking of the state, as it has to be
I'm well aware of that, but the perception would be that La. is a crappy place to live because its at the bottom of the country in just about everything. I'm just saying that life here is pretty damn good for many. I'm sure there are many states that rank at the top of the food chain where most Louisiana baws would be downright miserable. Embrace our miserable state!
